Hello,

I'm getting the error "Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable."

I know i can unzip and upload the package but i would like to get this functionality working again. I suspect something got messed up when moving the files the a new hoster.
I checked there's a map Packages which has 0755 and a map temp inside it, also 755.

What can i do?
Thanks.

shadav

you are trying to upgrade using patches?
you've downloaded the wrong file
you need to download from here
https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=patches
note the file names
smf_patch_2.0.18.tar.gz
you want this one that says patch

you don't want this one that says upgrade
smf_2-0-18_upgrade.zip

JeanCremers

no i'm not trying to upgrade, just wanting to test some package. Happens with all packages, used to work ok on the old hoster.

shadav

sorry that's usually a typical error when someone's trying to use the upgrade package instead of the patch package

you can try changing the permission to 775 and see if that helps

also after they moved your forum, did you run the Repair Settings and make sure that all the urls and paths are set to the new/correct ones?

JeanCremers

no sweat!
Setting permissions to 775 didn't help. I have run the repair settings tool.
Strange problem..

Try 777 and see if it would help.

JeanCremers

nobody? Any logs i could try? Maybe a bit code hacking to get more info?

Doug Heffernan

Is there actually a folder called temp folder inside the packages folder btw? I am asking because this looks like it could be a permission problem that occurs when the temp folder can't be created inside the Packages folder. If that is the case, create the temp folder and chmodd it.

Are you getting that error only with a particular mod or with all mods? Did you download the mod(s) that you are trying to install from github perhaps?

JeanCremers

I tried a few other mods yes, the error is persistant. I attached a pic, you can see the permissions, it looks ok to me.
No i did not download from github, i'm trying to download from package management in the admin section.

what if you download a mod from the mod site and upload it to your packages folder?
https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=mods
does this still happen?

also just to rule out other issues
what version of smf are you using
what theme are you using, does this do this with the default theme
what version of php are you using

you could maybe check your sever logs
any errors in your smf error logs

No, works fine, mod installs.

smf 2.0.18
php 7.2
default theme.
smf error logs shows repeatedly the same error about the empty package. Php error log is empty.
Frustrating ain't it.

Are you downloading from a URL or uploading a package saved from your computer?

Trying to install from admin - browse - download.

Shades.

Try downloading/saving the mod to your computer and uploading in package manager. ;)

Like mentioned, that works.
This is about the functionality to install from the admin section.

Arantor

So what package specifically are you trying? Let's verify that others can successfully do so.

Does not matter, as mentioned in the thread the error comes from every package that i try to install through admin. And yes it works when i upload just a package but that's not what i'm after. It used to work on the old hoster..

Arantor

The reason I asked for a specific package is so we could test it, because 1) the mod site has been overhauled since your move and may not work, 2) depending on whether it is an older package or a GitHub package this might play into it and 3) no one has confirmed it actually works the way you expect it to because the advice for many years was not to use it because it was flaky on many hosts. Perhaps including yours.

JeanCremers

Ok, good to know. Well it indeed worked like a charm on the old hoster. But i can live with it. 8)
