Continually updating attachments

On my current installation 2.0.18. users post a message with an attachment of a document. Someone suggests changes, so the attachment is modified, deselected, and a new version attached.

There can be 20 or more attachments, but only one (current is actually shown,

What happens to the unchecked (old) attachments. are they removed immediately from the server or during maintenance (if so which one?)

If you uncheck an attachment when editing a message it is deleted when the message is saved.

Admin -> Forum -> Attachments and Avatars -> File Maintenance might be useful.
