They already are. 

Long, long ago, search engines didn't like URL queries very much, and so early versions of SMF added an option for "SEO friendly URLs" that basically just added a fake ".html" extension to the end of many forum URLs. That option still exists today purely for the sake of backward compatibility, but if you are starting a new forum today, you don't need it.

But while the URL format really doesn't matter these days, there are other SEO optimizations that can make a difference. You may be interested in some of the SEO optimization mods available at https://custom.simplemachines.org.
