After installing SMF 2.1.2 I get a lot of "429 Too Many Requests" errors. I never got this error message before. No new mods have been installed since the last version of SMF was installed.

Are there others who are also experiencing this?

Is there a way to reduce the number of requests?

SpacePhoenix

Shared or dedicated server?

Any new errors in either the PHP or MySQL error logs?

Kira_

It is unlikely that this is related to SMF. Try to wait a bit. If it doesn't stop by itself, contact your hoster.

I agree with @Kira_, this is rather related to the host than Smf. Usually this type of message happens whenever someone repeatedly accesses a website and exceeds the rate limit. When there is not enough memory to process the requests, the 429 error occurs.

live627

could it be the polling script for the alerts?

@live627  I had someone mention that an issue that might be related https://www.smfhacks.com/index.php/topic,10229.msg45455/ with alerts. Was hoping to get more data.

To me, this sounds similar:

And I wonder if disabling host name lookups helps.
Address the process rather than the outcome.  Then, the outcome becomes more likely.   - Fripp

I believe that's @FrizzleFried

I wonder if there us a way to limit alert polling if multiple site tabs are open. Maybe via localStorage...

FrizzleFried

My webadmin determined it came down to my BADGES mod and the ALERTS system sending badges alerts.  We're still trying to determine why one evidently got stuck and sent THOUSANDS...

This.  This is exactly what it was.   We're trying to determine WHY/HOW.

Unfortunately the webadmin did provide more data... from many days later... which was the exact same data I sent (but at a different time) earlier vbgamer45.  I can send it along if you wish but I figured it wouldn't be helpful.

FrizzleFried

This is the data my webadmin sent...

Not sure if this helps?

"There were no hits on badge today at all when I checked previously, I was only showing the first entry in the logs to show how long it has been logging.

I checked again and got the following 7 entries:"

The logs rotate frequently -- We don't have the data from earlier in the week.
