How can I limit the number of posts?

How can I limit the number of posts that members can make when starting a new topic, or when responding/replying to a topic?  Allied to this, is how can I prevent auto generated posts, aka the use of bots?
Apologies if I've asked this sort of thing before; I'm sure I have, but I can't find a way of resolving these two issues.

The usual solution to bots is to keep them out in the first place, a la Spam - my forum is flooded with spam, what can I do

Is there a separate problem with non-bot users also making too many posts? Don't try to fix the bot problem by "limiting the number of posts", that's just a slow burn solution.

Many thanks for the link info, albeit these measures would make account registration more difficult.

Well, yes - but then you don't have weird arbitrary restrictions affecting actual members.

That's the whole point, as Arantor said.

Either you make registration harder (one time penalty on new accounts) or you make posting harder (ongoing penalty most/all accounts)

I have never heard of anyone being onboard with *stopping people contributing to a forum* for any reasons other than 1) paid listings (in which case, paid subscriptions, classifieds, other options exist), or 2) bad spam prevention, which just means kneecapping forum growth from those who are motivated.

Ok, then I'll opt for making account registration more difficult which hopefully will keep auto-posting scripts out, although as I recall, I did initially make the captcha and other measures more complex, but then a new member complained that this almost put him off registering, so I then subsequently made it easier.

Ever since I've been wondering if I was in fact conned into doing this.
