Cannot read/reply to private messages created before 2.1

Clicking on a private message to reply to existing private messages gives:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access this resource.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Any ideas?

check with your host...   check your SERVER error logs.  a 403 is usually triggered because of security on the server (often mod_security settings)

They told me that if I removed mod_security, I would have to install Cloudflare since the forum is being attacked by bots from China. Is there no other alternative?
Do I need another service provider? I am tried of dealing with all of this stuff. I just want the forum to run.

Or have the host figure out what part of mod_security is misconfigured and fix it
