Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can make a mod that lets you log into a Matrix chat server using an SMF forum account?

For those of you who don't know, Matrix is a federated chat program similar to Discord - it would be handy for forums that also want to provide an integrated real-time chat space. https://spec.matrix.org/v1.6/

Ideally, the SMF account should be mirrored on the matrix account - password changes, username changes and bans should all apply across each.

Also for my own purposes, I'm interested in a solution that works in SMF 2.0.19  :)

I'm also open to alternative suggestions if anyone has any!

OOF...  just looking at the API docs, that is going to be alot of work for someone to create a mod for....

As a much more low-tech alternative, I'd love to know if there's a mod that links forum accounts with IRC accounts  ;D

Im not sure if that would involve entering your forum name and password in the IRC, or if it could automatically log you in based on your IP address; it would be very cool if the latter was possible.

Matrix is surprisingly hard to do right, doing IRC is borderline impossible unless it's *your* IRC server in which case you can probably wire something up to interact with NickServ on registration to register people, but honestly... fighting with IRC clients is a level of hell (wouldn't use IP addresses to connect the dots) that isn't worth fighting with.

Do you have any alternative suggestions then? I did play around with this at one point, but it seems very clunky and I was unable to figure out how to link it to SMF http://www.phpfreechat.net/

I have no interest in setting it up, but I've done enough integration work with Matrix to other systems that I personally wouldn't want to attempt it.

As for alternatives... the only system I'd honestly care to bridge to an SMF is Discord and... I already did that for my own stuff but it's not fit to be shared, nor is it entirely suitable for anyone else at this point in time.

Is SSO possible as a solution here? Matrix seems to support it: https://matrix.org/docs/guides/sso-for-client-developers

If it is a solution and it can be implemented on SMF without too much disruption I would be ok paying someone to assist me setting it up; PHP is not an issue for me; but when I think of dealing with login systems I get cold sweat and start panicking  :'(

connecting a forum database with an external chat server,it's a bad idea for me. It's a risk for your data.

Sorry if not understanding, ran into this thread searching another fix...

You want to login to SMF, your forum. And then have chatrooms that when you click on that page is automatically your screen name, no additional registration, on your SQL, etc.. ??

If that is what you want, best $$$ I ever spent was with Blabit Pro, they connected it all for me, those tech guys were fast... https://justblab.com/blabax-pro-forums-wordpress-joomla-chat

They installed on 2.1.4 same SQL as forum...  Looks and works great if that is what your doing... FYI...

Thanks....
