Hi all,

New to the forum so please be nice to me..! I'm looking to start a small forum and photo gallery using SMF and Coppermine, but I have a question. I'm not experienced in coding or website setup in general, so I would appreciate any advice.

I have set up the domain I wish to use, and in cPanel I see that there are installers for both packages, so my question is which should be installed first, SMF or Coppermine, or does it not matter..?

Thanks,
Ria

Please do not use any autoinstaller in Cpanel.  They usually lead to problems.

You should always use OUR installer.

I don't even know if the Coppermine bridge still works with 2.0.19

Thanks for that, I'll bear it in mind. But does it matter which order they are installed in..?

Kindred

Don't think so. The bridge, if it still works, needs to be run after BOTH are installed correctly

If the bridge doesn't work you can set up Coppermine as a separate install and link back and forth with menu buttons.
When in Emor, do as the Snamors.

Ok, well I think I've got the system set up and (almost) working, but I do have another question.

When I read a posted topic, there is a box at the bottom "Quick Reply" - I would rather this not be there, how can I disable it..?

Thanks in advance

Ria

This is a profile option.  You can change it for all users -

Admin > Current Theme > Member Options

 Configure guest and new user options for this theme
 Change current options for all members using this theme

Set 'Use quick reply on topic display' > 'don't show at all'

You need to do both.  If it's already set to 'don't show at all' and it still shows, select 'change' in dropmenu, reselect 'don't show at all', and save.
When in Emor, do as the Snamors.

Thanks, however the options you mention just don't appear. See attached screenshot. Not sure what I'm doing wrong..?

That option has been removed in Smf 2.1.

rsgj0098

Hmm, that's a bit of a bugger, why did they do that..?

Kindred

Because it was one of thev things that was most requested to be always there.

Thought this was 2.0.  In 2.1 -

index.css

/* Styles for the quick reply area. */
#quickreply {
clear: both;
display: none;
}

When in Emor, do as the Snamors.

Arantor

It doesn't actually work properly because all the handling around quotes will now look broken, because it will expect to put content into the quick reply.

I did publish a mod for it, https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?msg=4120822 which if I remember should both restore the original behaviour and fix the side bug of merely trying to hide it. But it's been a while and I'm tired of being reminded I tried to do the thing the community asked for.

(But hey, at least we're not $160 forum software where this was never, ever, an option to begin with. Looking at you, XenForo.)

@Arantor Hmm, you seem to be right. I've never been a great fan of the quote feature tbh, it tends to get over-used, with people quoting humongous long posts and then just adding a single line, or worse still just a smiley  ::)

I can't find the mod you mention in that thread, the message you link to says "Don't ask me to publish it on the mod site" so am I missing something..?

I really need to do this, I'm used to older versions of SMF (as a user and mod) on other sites, which is why I chose it when I decided to start my own site. I really don't want to have to abandon it and use something else :(

It's attached to the linked post.  I've attached it here.  Haven't tried it.

@Sir Osis of Liver - Thanks, I must have missed that, my eyesight isn't what it was. Installed and appears to be working, so we'll see how it goes.

Arantor

I'm just the bad man who removed the option in the name of trying to make the software easier to use, and I attached a mod to fix it to my post, because if I actually put it on the mod site people would expect me to support it forever more. I still get asked about mods I wrote 15 years ago...

Speaking of which, I'm having this problem with Levgal ... kidding!  ;D

@rsgj0098 - I'm going to mark this solved but if you have any further problems or questions, by all means, mark it not solved and post your problem/question. :)

@Steve - Thanks, it seems to be stable, so hopefully you'll never hear from me again, well not about this, anyway..!
