Converting from phpbb 2.0.16 to SMF and keeping same directory

I'm new to SMF, I've actually not officially converted yet, but this is what I'm

I am hoping to convert my semi-active phpbb2 board (ver. 2.0.16) to SMF, but if possible, not have much (if any) downtime for the board, and if possible I'd like to keep the same address. I've looked at the various guides to converting, but I'm still a little confused. Do I need to create a new folder (like www.host.com/smf) and put all the SMF stuff there, run the conversion program while leaving the other board up, and then delete the original board folder and rename the 'smf' folder to the original folder address... or would that wind up deleting some key functions and mess up the board?

So I guess my question is:

  • Do I convert in a new folder, or the same folder the board is housed in?
  • If I have to convert in a new folder, is it possible to move the converted board to the original folder? Or would it just be easier to make a redirect page?

I'd really like to use SMF, as it seems easier to keep updated, install mods, and doesn't seem to be open to spammers or attack like my board is currently being. I hope this question hasn't been asked a million times and I just didn't look hard enough. Either way, thanks!

If you want to convert to the same directory, then you'll need to delete all your phpBB files except the following:

config.php
extension.inc
avatars (not sure where those are stored)

Then, upload all the SMF files to that location and install SMF on the same database (makes things much easier).
Afterwards, you can run the converter and won't have to deal with fixing paths, etc. afterwards.

Thanks a lot! That really clears things up. Another quick question: is there a way to clean up the database without accidentally losing the board or the members? There's going to be a lot of unneccessary tables leftover. (Or do I just wait until the conversion and drop anything with phpbb on it?)

After the conversion is complete, you can go into phpMyAdmin and check the box next to each phpBB table, then go down to the bottom and choose "drop" from the "With Selected" list.
