I want to NOT display it. I did go to admin and deselected it there [member options] so unless there is another place, it is not working.

SMF version 2.1.4
Mods: TinyPortal 2.0.0 [ the others would not install]
PHP version: 8.2.24

This was installed as an upgrade so it is basically bare of anything, not even any themes...yet

By default it's always visible in SMF 2.1.
You can change the behavior and also allow your users to change it for themselves, using this MOD: https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=4351

thanks Diego, I will give it a try. I also went into the permissions area and  told it to not allow it with the rest of the other perms in there.

I wish I'd never listened to all the people who wanted it there by default and to not be bothered with the choice to turn it on/off.

Also funny how much more expensive software also doesn't have the same option to turn it off.

I am finding--so are my other 2 admins--getting used to the new look, some things different/drop menus vs linked and no sidebar linkage like before. It is hard to work with and looks real different but I don't think there is another software I would want. I miss the sidebar links in the admin section and profile area....ah well.

Seems the reply areas are not as compact as here, ours are huge

Sorry for breaking another thing you used to like, but here's mods to put it back. I only removed the sidebar because it caused all kinds of havoc for the translators, and I redesigned the admin panel to resemble cPanel because that was more familiar (and actually more useful than 2.0's since the admin panel front page actually now links to everything)

I wish I could remove the changes I made to 2.1, wish I'd never bothered trying to improve any of it now.

no problem sugar, I also take the changes as being part of the responsive templates and yes they are totally different animals. I am trying to find updates to the mods I had installed that would like to have but no problem, we learn to adjust.

Wasn't a bad idea at all (although sidebars are easier to work with), but someone should have decided to go with it or not.  We have the user menu up top, then the forum dropmenus, then the admin dropmenus, then the admin center welcome message, then the live from SMF and support info.  All that clutter pushes the new cpanel menu offscreen.  Didn't even know it was there until well into beta.  IMO, the admin dropmenus are redundant and should have been removed in favor of the cpanel menu, the welcome message should at minimum be collapsible, and the other stuff moved into right sidebar.  As it is, the cpanel menu looks like an afterthought.  But I use your sidebars and ignore the rest, problem solved.  :)

Well, we have the user menu separate from the site since the user menu is about the user, rather than about the site.

The admin dropmenus are not actually redundant - the logic is that power users can go directly to a page they want rather than going to a top level page and then in, but to actually remove that fully in admin requires a much larger dismantling of admin because everything runs around the menu setup.

As for the other blocks, I think the welcome block has always been unnecessary, I will concede that the original place I designed this for didn't have the blocks either, but I did publish screenshots of this as it was being built, long before even beta...

So, the entire exercise actually was a waste of time, good to know. Little of the last decade has convinced me of anything else at this point.

Oh, stop complaining, it's never a waste of time to try something new.  And apparently others like the current format, I see it's unchanged in 3.0 (alpha 2).

Except for all the people who complain about how it's changed and is different now, you mean? (Pot, kettle, black.)

You know the admin area is literally on the roadmap for a do-over, right? Good, maybe they'll get it right this time and everyone will love it.

I agree about the size of the "blocks." Greets and info are fine, but they don't really need to be so big or add a collapse button. Mine would be collapsed totally since I would only be interested in seeing the new version being offered, but that is just me.

I think a lot of things are just missed from the "older versions" and we will adjust but I do agree that even collapsing the unwanted stuff then the c-panel view would appear more up top...where we need it to do our thing quicker.

I appreciate all the effort that goes into this stuff since I have been using this software for now going on 18 yrs.

I love how some creators don't mind being asked what/why and try to help rather than state that they have "for sale" stuff they do support and the items here are not top priority. Like earlier when you guys asked for me to remove that line...I didn't want to delete totally, in case the next rendition might include it again...so I commented it out /* the line*/. Have not had a chance to actually install it and the side bars yet still going thru email from yesterday...LOL

I think that's scheduled for alpha 4.  Don't know where we're at now, probably alpha 3, will have a look when I get the energy (not soon :( ).

I'm sure you know it's not reasonable to expect everyone to like everything you do, so don't take it personally if some folks don't.

We're at alpha 2 right now.

And yes, I know it's not reasonable to expect everyone to like the things I did, I had just hoped in the intervening decade that I'd have seen *any* comments about the things that I'd done that people *liked*. Because all the comments I've *ever* seen are either complaints about things changing, or complaints that the change wasn't enough.

Is it unreasonable to want *any* positive feedback? I guess wanting someone, anyone, to tell you that what you spent time doing wasn't a waste is now too high a bar to clear.

The reality is that I got more positive feedback spending a weekend writing a feature for one person than I *ever* got for my contributions to 2.1. I didn't think I asked for much, but I guess it really is true about being a thankless task.

It is very rare indeed, to please all of the people, all of the time.  :)
I am sure that you have done some good work, that is still part of SMF today. Thanks.  :D

I think that as long as you get personal satisfaction from doing something that helps many, it is all worthwhile. Whether those that you help realize  your contributions or not

I did until all I got for it was negative feedback.
