Unable to add a new message icon

I have loaded a copy of a new message icon (png format) to almost every folder /subfolders in the default theme images folder. But I still cannot load it as a new icon. Where should I place the source file?

I also looked in the Online Guide and tried to search in this forum, without luck

I believe that they mean the message icon that you can apply to a post or thread.

You would need to enable the custom message icon option. This will enable the menu option to add/edit message icons.
The option is found under Forum > Smiley and Message Icons > Settings.
