Change of Member Name?

I'm currently documenting a Forum Succession Plan for the SMF forum I created and would like the actual (and displayed) member name to be more generic than ColinJM. Is this doable please?

Both the login name and the display name can be changed for any user (and for security reasons it is often recommended that both names be different).

Sounds like maybe you want to setup one or more admin accounts - on my forums I use a non-admin account with elevated privileges (but not all/full admin privileges) granted via a specific membergroup for my day-to-day stuff and I only login to the admin account when I need all/full admin privileges.

I assumed the request was for here? If so - changing display name can be done by yourself, changing username is an admin permission and you'd probably want to talk to @Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen if so.

I can change the displayname sure, if that is what you wanted. Just let me know what you'd like it changed to.

Also, @SleePy @Sesquipedalian it seems my name gets broken again when tagged.

You're tagging the wrong guy, @ColinJM. (Don't try to tag Lex... that functionality is broken on here... hence the issue being brought up in this thread, directly)

Probably best to send a message (General Question) via the form at https://www.simplemachines.org/about/contact.php.

For the display name, that's something you can change on your own, I believe, through your profile.

Thanks @Douglas. Yes, I'am aware I can change the display name - but also want to change the login name. Will do as you sufggest when I'm ready.

Yes, it's technically possible to change the login name as well, but I would rather not.

Or at least we should have another working contact method ready on stand by,
because based on earlier experience this might lock you out until I or you yourself reset your password as well.

If you want to do this only to give access to your profile here, I would suggest not to do it - It's easier to simply request whoever takes over, to register here on their own if they want to or need to. There is no reason to hand over your profile here.

I think I asked Liroy to change mine, I didn't have any issues but it was a long time ago... Granted I was able to read his pm confirmation via email notification.

Changing the login name still requires a password reset as the salt still contains the username/login name as a part of the password hash.  Upon changing the login name, it should set the account to inactive and send an activation link to the account email.  I would ensure your email is accurate and you are receiving emails from the community forums before you continue.
