If you're on an SMF forum, you can follow & reply to posts on that forum to your heart's content today.  You can even allow guest access.  No need for federation to do any of that.

The question is how to be able to do so across forums.

If you just want lightweight follows across forums, an RSS feed would likely be sufficient, e.g.:

The point of this, at least the part I'm pursuing, is to allow people on AP-linked social media sites to follow the posts on an SMF forum, and optionally participate.  That other methods of following (like email or RSS) exist isn't really solving this.

I'm not against turning the SMF forum into a fully fledged fediverse instance, but that's going be more complicated and more work.  My desires are simpler: my wordpress allows fedi users to follow me as an author, and reply to my posts without leaving their home instance.  I see that as a valuable way to connect SMF forums to the changing internet, and increase our relevance.

As an aside, I see NodeBB went live with their AP connections two days ago.  Surely there's something to learn from their implementation (and the fact that they got funding from NLNet to do it - maybe SMF can get some assistance too, something that usually greases the works.  ;) ).
