All of a sudden receiving email messages about threads a year ago

All of a sudden I am getting email notices from private messages, forum threads from over a year ago. I already received these a year ago, but I am getting them as if they were new. Users are also receiving emails.

How can I debug this?

- Look around all recent changes, from mod installs & updates to table restores & repairs...  What changed?
 - Look at log_notify for clues.
 - See if anything is stuck in the background_tasks table.  It should pretty much be empty at all times, with brief, short-lived entries, unless something is logjammed/broken.

OK smf_background_tasks table is empty.
