I have tried FAQ and search.  I believe those functions are for folks that know what they are looking for.  All I know is I am hosted by HostGator, mu domain is Godaddy and I am running version 2.0.14.  I know I need to update, I have looked on this site for 2 weeks trying to figure out how, and it is all Greek.  I think I am supposed to be at Vr 2.1.4.  I can no longer approve members, I get the message..."Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 2.0.15, while your database is at version 2.0.14. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

Pretty sure I am breaking rules about asking a question on this site, but have no idea what to do.  Would be willing to pay for help, but could note even find answer for that

Sir Osis of Liver

You can upgrade from 2.0.14 to 2.0.19 in package manager, or you can upgrade to current version 2.1.4 with upgrade package -

I have looked at this section many times, have even tried to download the files required, zip, and the others.  I do not seem to either get the download correct, or I am downloading it to the wrong area.  I am not sure it would really matter if I did get it downloaded correctly as I have no idea how to get it from my computer to HostGator.

This is what I get after I download the Zip file and try and open it.  Again, its all Greek.  The guy who used to do the IT for the site is long gone and I cant find a new one.

But thank you for the response.

Have a look at the following link on how to perform a large upgrade.

Again, I appreciate the response, but I have looked at all this and I am either not capable of downloading the correct file, or I am unable to figure out what to open after the download.

Again, he is what I get after I download the 2.1.4 Large Download Zip file and click to open it. 3.7 MB seems like an awful small file size to me!

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Well, it does look like the correct package (It is about 3,74 MB or 3 925 566 bytes), and the upgrade instructions linked above do explain what you need to do with it.

QuoteThe SMF upgrade archive contains all of the files that need to be uploaded to the same location where the current forum is located, and overwrite all of the existing files with new files.

So, this is the very first thing you need to figure out.

Without knowing how to do this, you can't really continue with the upgrade.

How you can help SMF

Thread Killer

Yes, that is what I figured...and that is why I was wondering if there is a way to find paid help on this site.

Yes, there is. You can post at this board:

Once you've downloaded the upgrade package and unzipped it (you have), you can upload the files to your host server with their control panel file manager, or an FTP client like FileZilla.  If you're going to be running a forum would be a good idea to learn how to do basic things like this yourself.

With these 2 bits of info, I was able to get to the cpanel, find File Manager, copy the file name, get it loaded to the site and now I have to figure out what else to do.

Thanks!

If you've uploaded smf_2-1-4_upgrade.zip to server, you should be able to unzip it in place with file manager.  Make sure it's in the directory where you want to install the forum.  When it's unzipped you link to it directly with url, something like yourdomain.com/upgrade.php. That will start the upgrade process.  Backup your 2.0.14 forum files and database before upgrading.

I do appreciate the help, when I search for the updated zip file this come up...

Then when I double click on it, this come up and I cant seem to find the rest of the stuff you have been so generous with to share with me.  I am not sure I have unzipped it where it is supposed to be or not, and I will keep trying to understand and execute the linking it with the url.

I will keep pluggin and look for the things you have told me about!  Thanks again!

Sir Osis of Liver

Can't see much on your screenshot, but looks like you uploaded the zip to the wrong directory.  If you want the forum to run in yourdomain.com, upload the zip into /public_html and unzip it there.  If you intend to use the domain for other things, create /public_html/forum directory, or something similar, and upload the zip there.  You've unzipped the zip one level above /public_html, you'll want to clean that up.

I believe I have crashed the site and since I tried to back it up but I could never get it done that is pretty much the end.  Hosting had become to expensive at $600 for 3 years that I was gonna let it lapse in August anyway, just wanted to go out with the most current version!  Dont have to worry about that now, thanks for the help from this site!

Sir Osis of Liver

$600 for three years is crazy if all you're using it for is a forum.  Not on my computer, will post some info tomorrow. Just make sure you have local backups of forum files and database.

I appreciate the offer, but I believe I deleted the forum info, and it was not backed up, so pretty sure I cut the Carotid!  I tried backing up the files at hostgator, it said it would send email when done, never got it, tried again, same results.  I went into this with a Cavalier attitude and it cost me!  How I did, I have no idea.  Having said that if you think there is a way I can get it back, please post!  I cant even go to my site anymore, I get a 404 error!

When you say you deleted the forum info, are we talking about the files or the database as well. If the later, if there is no back up then I'm afraid that the forum is indeed lost. Can you ask your host if they have a backup of your database? Most hosts make regular backups and you never know, you might luck out.

Sir Osis of Liver

Are you still able to access your Hostgator account?

Not sure on the 1st part of the question, will ask HostGator tomorrow about the 2nd part.

Yes.

Sir Osis of Liver

Do you have 30 day backup service on Hostgator?  If not, and you have no local backups, you can ask HG support if they can restore the forum from server backups.
