[HELP] With writing a Mod

Hello coders!  I am working on a mod for the smileys.  First I will tell you what I have accomplished and then what I need.

I am writing a Mod for my forum, and if all is well I will make a package for SMF for others to use.  This mod seemed simple enough to be my first Mod attempt for SMF, but alas I have gone awry somewhere.

I am basically making different popups for added smileys.  As most of you know if you have an extensive smiley library you have 2 choices.  Put them in the post form or in the [more] pop up.

For me this wasn't good enough.  With a library of over 600 smileys, the pop up was very hard to find the specific smiley you wanted for that post. 

To over come this I have made other pop up "categories"  And will use the to help organize the smileys I have.

So far I have added the $txt for the pop up categories, I have added the lines for the pop ups them selves, and I have added all lines for the pop ups to move the smileys into.

Everything works great upto this point.  However, when editing smileys, I can move smileys from the post form to the [more] folder (which I have renamed as one of the categories) and everything is fine.  I have a problem though...

First I have 7 other pop up windows.  8 total.  ALL 8 have the same NAME as the [more] pop up, and apparently all 7 new ones have the same "address" as the post form.

If I try to move a smiley from either the post form OR the [more] pop up it moves to the front of the post form box.

I am guessing the pop ups are controled by SQL???  I have NO experience with SQL.  I am hoping someone can help me figure out how to finish this small part of the mod, so I can move on to the organization parts.

So does that mean no one knows how the [more] smiley pop up is coded?  Like I said, I have the other pop ups, but they have the same address as the other popup because I have just copy and pasted.  If I could find out how the pop up is coded I could re write the code for the other pop ups.

Anyone?  Please?

I can't find the topic, but I recall seeing somewhere that mods shouldn't be used to install themes, avatars, or smilies.  Maybe it is better to try the theme board?

Mods are great for installing avatars.  There are no code modifications whatsoever.  It just extracts the images .

Well that is great information to know.  The only problem is I am not using a Mod to INSTALL smileys.  I am trying to write a mod that ADDS extra pop ups FOR the smileys already in the database.


For example:

As default you have 2 places for smileys to be.. on the post form, OR in the [more] pop up.

What I want is MORE places to put smileys.. say on the post form, in the [more] pop up, in a [more2] pop up, and a [more3] pop up.

See?   I already have the other pop ups coded, and they are there, the problem is that the pop ups have the same DETAILS as the original [more] pop up, and when I try to move smileys into them they get put into the post form.
