AJAX should also work with quickreply, similar like in vBB  ::)

Ben_S

Why, what if there have been 200 new replies whilst you are typing your reply, how does vB handle that?

Actually Ben vB doesn't let you know if there were replies made why you posted ;).  The way it is now its fast and good. :P

I still have the feeling that the AJAX usage in vBB quickreply seems to be faster than in SMF

JayBachatero

Klumy the issue is like ben stated.  You will not be able to get notified if new posts were made while you were posting.

I see
But can Ajax be integrated, if I deselect this option (notified if new posts were made while you were posting) in SMF

Ben_S

I'm not talking about the option to notify you of new posts whilst you were posting (can't stand that option personally.) I am asking what vB does if there have been a load of posts while you were typing your post out with quick reply and someone else posts before you post your reply.

Does it fetch their post?

No, vB just adds your post to the bottom of the list and you won't see new posts until you do a normal refresh of the page.

Also - if you're viewing a topic with 30 messages, and you have chosen to list 30 messages per page your quick-reply will become message 31 on that page until you do a full page-refresh.

I don't really see those things as big downsides in vB though - but it shouldn't be too much trouble to actually fetch other new posts when you do a quick-reply...

Sounds pretty pointless then, you have to refresh to see if anyone else actually posted or you will miss it.

Theres times when AJAX is useful, that just sounds like using it for the sake of using it and  creating more problems than it solves.

Agree.

I was just about to ask this question guys. I as like thinking wow vBulletin's add thing requires no reload. Then I read the explainations on this thread and I feel you are right when you say it is not needed.

Especially on a board that is very active Ajax adding would defeat the purpose because the user will have to refresh the page to see replies that happened...

Good thinking. Keep it up...

I would have to say that i think this would be an excellent feature. With the new replies problem, how about just going to the full post screen If there are new replies (like it already does)?

Yes you can, it would work the exact same way as it does now. If you don't know what it does now, if there are new replies it just goes to the full post screen and says
Warning: New replies posted while you were typing
or something like that.

Thantos

And what about members (like me) who find that feature annoying and turn it off?

Thats the most annoying feature in the world, disabled by default on my board, absolutly a nightmare when a thread is getting replies every 30 seconds or so.

I actually like that.  Specially here when offering support sometimes other people post the same solution before you while you were typing your's and I don't see a point in posting the same solution to one problem.
