I want to have a system which ranks the 'quality' of a users post. For example, I've got the shop mod installed and working, but that gives a set number of 'beans' (in my case..) for creation of a topic or reply. This however is resulting in a lot of spam posts and topics.

I'd like to be able to rank the posts on things like post length, for example, less that 25 characters = 0 beans, 26:100 chars  = 5 and so on...

The shop mod itself places itself in the post.php file, but since I need to do checks on the $message var (at least thats the one I think i need to check) during the posting process, I've not really got much of an idea on where to place it. display.template would be my idea, but i'm not 100% and I'm hoping someone else might know better...
