Extension/addon interface ?

How would it be with a extension/addon interface, like a API to process extensions instead of all these mods which gets very non-up-to-date as soon any new version is released of SMF.

With a such API we could write many extensions which would not be non-working (as most mods) as soon a new version is released and boost SMF a lot in reputation as a wide product, and my company would with happiness contribute with any kind of help in the progress of the development with the API and/or extensions to it.

Of course mods shall still co-exist with a such API but only for more extreme modifications of the code which the API can't be helpful with.

I hope this suggestion can be attractive for the future SMF.
