problems with extended characters

Somehow, either when upgrading to SMF 1.05 OR when moving to another host, all of a sudden the forum cannot handle extended ascii characters. There are lots of examples of:

Elektrojänis to Elektrojänis
trans·mog·ri·fy<br>tr.v. trans·mog·ri·fied, trans·mog·ri·fy·ing, trans·mog·ri·fies

etc.....

Please tell me what I need to change to properly display these characters?
