how about a better set of avatars on a base install?

not sure what, but there must be something better to use? US states? countries..... something. when I install a forum, first thing I do is delete these two sets of avatars.  :o

just a suggestion.  8)

I agree
SMf is an international software, so the avatars should also have a more international flair.

Some more generic avatars would certainly be better what ever they are.

The current ones are really bad quality.

What's wrong with members uploading their own avatars if they don't like the current ones?

Not everyone is as computer savvy as yourself. Heck, there are some that aren't even as computer savvy as me! :D

The avatars are pretty shocking. It would be nice to have some images that aren't bad pictures of American (mostly at least) pop stars, and Hollywood actors. Great pains have been made to make this software international, and that should be applauded. This software is being used all around the world because of its language sets. There is something else that irritates me even more than avatars in this regard though, but is much more difficult to do anything about, and that is the list of holidays with the calendar. It is very American-centric. There are loads of holidays that we have in the UK that are not mentioned (and not just the Christian ones that dominate the the present list), but May Day (celebrated throughout Europe), and many others; most of the holidays listed are only celebrated in America, or predominantly Christian societies. But actually, I'm not asking for things to be necessarily added; the list should be editable!

Sorry, I've usurped the thread somewhat. :( - It's the same issue though.

As for the holidays issue, there was a request a long while back for people to provide a list of holidays for their country, don't think many people bothered to participate so it never happened.

Has there ever been talk of making the list editable. It is very odd that it is not.

No you could upload a whole BUNCH of avatars (like I did for mysite over 2000 I think) and your members can simply select from those rather than asking them to upload their avatars...

I would simply remove all avatars from the base installation package... as well as the holidays... those are things admins should setup on their own...

Of course I set up my own avatars, the biggest problem being sourcing them. (I'm cheap, you see). My comments are meant more generally, and actually, I was, and am, far more bothered about the holiday list, as that is not editable. At least not easily.

Where can I find 2,000 freely available avatars? The ones I use claimed "public domain", but I am not altogether sure about that.

I don't really agree. If you are new to setting up forums, and have limited computer skills, that would be just another thing that would need to be resolved. I think an included set is useful, just not this set. It was the first graphical change I made.

The avatars i got are free for use, it includes various categories like cartoons etc., just search for "free avatars" or "free forum avatars" and you will get some good ones.

Making avatars for your own forum should be covered by § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use (The Fair Use Clause). If the copyright owner asks you to remove the content - not very likely for a small avatar - you should of course respect his/her/their wish and remove it, but you won't get any legal trouble over it.

Simple Machines which distributes the avatars as part of their forum software packet is in a completely different position though...

Any URLs? When I was searching, I mostly just found dodgy sites with doubious executables to download.

Thanks.

That's a fair point, but I would have thought they should be able to cobble together a reasonable set they can use.

Yes, they should definitely be able to come up with a better collection of avatars than the ones in the current distribution.
