Hidden Emails

I recently lashed out on IPB 2.1.4, yes I know please calm down....

Why you ask, well one main feature that isn't available to SMF1.1rc2 emails hidden from other members as standard yet with the ability to send each other emails via the forum.

This is what most forums allow, SMF on the other hand shows your email to the world and it's spammer, or you can lock emails out all together, not a good move.

Adding this feature would bring SMF in line with other forums, and convert people like me who need a safe secure way to email other members.

Add that feature, sort out the server bug that stops SMF working with some hosts, and I'll convert the board over and blow what I spent on it.

New features won't be added until after the final version of 1.1 comes out. But, I don't know if this will be considered or not for 1.2.

My guess is it'll be many months before 1.2 gets released, so at least you won't waste all that money. ;)

I suspected as much, I just thought it would be nice to give you guys a heads up as to why I didn't go with SMF, as I can't be the only one needing this feature.

Besides I got a one year licence, so by the time I loose my support, SMF may have this feature so I can switch.

The ASP forum I used to use had this function and it didn't really serve much purpose.

Mostly servers that had the feature turned on got incorrectly marked as spam servers by RBLs from users to stupid to read the messages.

SMF effectively already has this feature although in a different way. If you send someone a PM you can enable e-mail notification why gives you the same functionality

This is the same kind of responce I got when I asked about password protecting threads - you don't need it, there is no point etc etc

Well I need it as I needed password protection for individual threads, and as IPB does that I went with it.

I'm just giving you the benefit of my experience on this, so you can make a better product, just turning round and saying it isn't needed just ignores the point.

I see you're point but adding what you requested would almost be a duplicate feature.

Why not just edit the default profile so that all members will get an e-mail when you send them a PM?

That will work in exactly the same way

That argument does make sence, and may have perswaded me before I spent the money, but it is a fact that emails are sometimes preferable to PMs, after all emails don't stay in the database, so don't take up valubale space.

H

You have a point there although from the statistics I have seen IPB takes up more database space than SMF anyway so the PMs just use up the space IPB would have used :P
