I am wanting to use SMF for my forum but I do have some concerns:

  • Posting Pictures/Attachments - From what I read in the help section, the administrator can activate attachments and the user can post images from their local machines. Is that a true statement? I have looked at so many forums that my eyes are crossed here lately to pick which software I want. I have looked at several SMF forums and I don't see any members posting pictures ::) I see the insert image icon on the posts, but you have to have the image stored on a server to use that. I want my members to be able to post pics without a lot of hassle.
I would like to see some more forums out there that are powered by SMF with a lot of functionality to be able to make my mind up. I like SMF for the most part, I just want to make sure that it is the oen that will work for what I want to do.

Yep, when typing the post (not the quick reply), they'll be right below the text box. You can have the Additional Options... link expand to show the options or you can just have the options show up, if:

1. the options are turned on, from the admin.
2. have the proper permissions, as a member, set by the admin.

Here, only staff members have the proper permissions, I believe.

If you're not sure, it's always best to ask questions. :)

Thanks for the reply anunlike, I have looked at so many forum softwares out there and I am trying to decide. I like SMF ALOT and I think it is the way to go. I am just trying to know how to set it up for what I wanted it to do.
Basically, I will have a home page, with SMF integrated into it and then the forum.
I am really looking for a good list of SMF top 5 websites that will give me an idea how to set up SMF from a design perspective. Thanks again!

No problem, glad to help.

If you might be interested in a portal, you could always try TinyPortal. - http://www.tinyportal.net

For design, I'd suggest looking through the Graphics and Templates board and the Themes child board for ideas. You'll probably want to look through the Showcase board to see other live sites.

WOW! That Tinyportal website sure changed the way I was looking at this whole forum thing! That rocks! So with that said, what version of SMF do I need to use? It looks like most of the themes are set for 1.05...will those themes work with .05 and .06? If so, then I should download and use 1.06 right?
What about blogs? How do you integrate Blogs into SMF or are those types of things already in the admin section of the forum? See I have a hard time understanding what this forum will allow me to do until I get it downloaded and can play around in the admin section.
Also, Arcades...now that is cool. Is that something that comes with a certain theme? I am full of questions now...Thanks for al your help on this.

Well, if you use TP, you'll have to download the themes on the TP site. The themes here are not designed to work with TP.

My guess is that the final and stable 1.1 will be coming out in not too long, which will replace 1.0.6 as the final and stable release. If you can, you may want to wait till it comes out. Both 1.0.6 and 1.1 have been out for a while, so quite a few mods and themes will work with either, but you just have to check.

Themes that work with 1.0.5 should work with 1.0.6.

I'm not sure about how to integrate blogs in with SMF or TP. You'd have to search around on each respective site to find out. But, no, it's not a built in feature, you'd have to manually do that yourself.

So, play around with it, already. :D

There is an arcade mod here: http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=36
The site for it is http://www.smfarcade.com. It doesn't come with any theme.

Glad to help.
