I'm supposed to be on that list, I have been on a translation list since September 2002 for Norwegian translation. ETA for the Norwegian translation is March 23rd.

Portuguese ivogames

It's ivogomes ;)

The portuguese translation is 90% done. Only the Help file left to translate!!
Fixed. Sorry about that.

Sorry Skoen, I know you're a translator, that list is just the one I've written up from my PM inbox ;) I'll put you up there.

We're hoping to have a French language pack for the public beta out in a few days :)

Finnish is done http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7193.0 You can put that in download area. Part of help file isnt translated, but i wont translate it because its currently under rewrite :)

So you mean that the current help file is going to be replaced?

I'm not touching the contextual help ATM, but I'm completely rewriting the stuff that's associated with the help button, which basically means everything that looks like this:

/* For the help sections, translate like so...
$txt['help_section_blah'] = array(
array( <-- this is a new section!
'name' => TRANSLATE THIS PART (if it is there.),
'anchor' => TRANSLATE THIS TOO (if it is there...),
'text' => TRANSLATE ALL OF THIS!
),
so on.
); */

Quote
If so, should I translate this one or wait for the new one?

Not easy to give a straight answer because, while I'd like to see the new user help out ASAP, it's not likely to be finished for a week or two yet because:

1. There's a lot more of it!
2. So we're looking at separating it from the contextual help altogether...
3. So I'm also working on a new format for the files that you'll be given for this particular section.

bostasp

I've told the folks doing the French translation not to translate the Help yet, since you're re-writing it, and SMF is still in beta :)

Owdy

How about that translators team and board? :)
It would be nice to know advance what strings are changed in new versions etc etc.

Yeah, it would :)
I'd like to be able to put them on the download page as soon as I've checked them through too.

So I'm also working on a new format for the files that you'll be given for this particular section.

Thought I might post a few snippets of the new stuff for you all to see.

What we're planning to do is to give you XML files to translate for the user help, then transforming these through XSLT to generate straight XHTML for the distributions.

So hopefully this comment should be self-explanatory:

When applied to stuff like this:

Code removed by Peter Duggan 2004-03-31 because that bit's now being done in a far more elegant manner!

But some further instructions have been included as attributes where they help to clarify things:

<bbc-help>
<bbc-name>Bold</bbc-name>
<bbc-button translate="no">bold</bbc-button>
<bbc-code>bold</bbc-code>
<html-open translate="no"></html-open>
<html-output>bold</html-output>
<html-close translate="no"></html-close>
<bbc-comments>*</bbc-comments>
</bbc-help>
<bbc-help>
<bbc-name>Italicize</bbc-name>
<bbc-button translate="no">italicize</bbc-button>
<bbc-code>italicize</bbc-code>
<html-open translate="no"></html-open>
<html-output>italicize</html-output>
<html-close translate="no"></html-close>
<bbc-comments>*</bbc-comments>
</bbc-help>

And the only other thing I'd like to add just now is that a text editor with appropriate syntax highlighting should make the job really quite straightforward if you've got one!

Does coding knowlege required to do translation? i know a little bit of coding, but not much, but i'd still like to help. I can do Traditional Chinese. thanks

While translation doesn't involve any coding as such, it does require enough knowledge to know what to translate and what to leave...

So it doesn't really matter whether you're translating this:

array(
'name' => 'BBC',
'anchor' => 'code',
'text' => '
For obvious reasons standard HTML code cannot be used in posts. Instead SMF allows the use of SMF Bulletin Board Code (BBC) in posts. BBC is similar to HTML, but safe and standardized for bulletin board use.

Type This

For This
Or this:

<secheading>References</secheading>
<subsection ref="bbcref">
<subheading>SMF Bulletin Board Code</subheading>
<para>The buttons shown belong to the SMF default theme and may differ from forum to forum.</para>
<bbc-reference>
<bbc-heading>
<header-name>Tag Name</header-name>
<header-button>Button</header-button>
<header-code>Code</header-code>
<header-output>Output</header-output>
<header-comments>Comments</header-comments>
</bbc-heading>
<bbc-help>
<bbc-name>Bold</bbc-name>
<bbc-button translate="no">bold</bbc-button>
<bbc-code>bold</bbc-code>
<html-open translate="no"></html-open>
<html-output>bold</html-output>
<html-close translate="no"></html-close>
<bbc-comments>*</bbc-comments>
</bbc-help>

The important thing's simply being able to distinguish code from text! :)

Nope, you don't need coding knowledge, but a little bit helps :)

CapriSire

am i the only one that wants to do traditional chinese?

Tomer

Hebrew will be done in less then a week, I hope. :)

I apologise that I haven't done much in regards to languages over the past couple of days. If you look at first post, then you'll notice I've put up the Finnish, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish language packs that I have. Anyone currently translating, please take a peak at these to see how they've been done :)
