Search engine friendly URLs not working on Apache server with mod_rewrite...

SMF Version: SMF 1.1 RC2
I have an Apache server with mod_rewrite but it doesn't work. The mod_rewrite works with Joomla but not SMF for some reason. What do I need to do? I noticed there was no .htaccess file is that the problem?

noticed this post after posting mine... I am running 1.0.7 and its not working either... anyone with ideas...

SMF doesn't use mod_rewrite, like the help pop up says, it needs php to be compiled as an apache module rather than running as a cgi. Check if this is the case.
