Can this script be modded? Counter for unique hits

Well I found a counter at phpjunkyard that works great- except it counts everytime someone goes to the index page.  Is there a way to modify the script to make it only count unique hits?  I tried posting my ? on junkyardphp's forums  but nobody has replied- the forums are not very active!  I don't like the other free counters out there because they have ads attacthed to them!  Here is the script-

With that script, you are just adding 1 everytime that page is loaded. You are not trying any information to make each visit unique. You would need a different approach to make it so that it tracks only unique visitors. Maybe by using their IP Addresses, and md5 that ip so that it is a bit more secure and only count the unique IP's in your file.

Try Tracewatch [nofollow].  It's an awesome script.  It also works by putting code on all the pages that you want to be counted.  But in the user interface, it will break pageviews down by uniques, robot views, etc.  It also provides stuff like referrer info, graphs and visitor path analysis and time spent on each page.  And it's 100% free.
