Default Theme Error After Install - First Time User

After installing SMF 1.1 RC2 in a private, protected directory, the forum opens up in text only mode with the following error (#1) at the top of the page:

The default theme's directory is wrong, please correct it by clicking this text.

After following the link, I then get the following error (#2):

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '%', expecting ')' in /homepages/27/d160833369/htdocs/private/forum/Sources/Themes.php on line 1851

I have no idea what to do.  I had tried previously to install the forum at the root (not in a protected private directory).  The theme looked fine and I did not get error #1.  Whenever I tried to click on the links to modify the theme, however, I did still get error #2.  I am puzzled.

The second error usually occurs when a file hasn't been uploaded properly. Re-upload that file and make sure it's being uploaded in Binary mode.
