What is SMF 1.0.7 and SMF 1.1.rc2?

I know this is going to seem like the most basic question to date.  However, I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get my mind around it.  I have searched through the forums, downloads, and FAQ's with little results.


What are the differences in these two products? 
SMF 1.0.7

SMF 1.1.rc2

I will assume based on the response the following will be answered...  Which one to use?

Thank you eldacar for the response.  The mud is a little clearer...  sorta...

I did know and sorta understood this.  Again, this could be a community thing rather than a core development thing.  In reading through this, it would only make sense to go with the "Gold."  However, and this is where I have issues.

It appears in data mining through themes, add-ons, security releases etc... that many are developed and modified to work "ONLY" with say SMF 1.1 RC2.  It just appears that there is a lot of effort to explicitly support a Beta Release.  Thus this threw me off.  It also appears that Joomla (CMS) runs 1.1 RC2.

I have been an Engineer/Developer for over twenty-three years and understand development lifecycles and migration paths.  It just appears that the RC in many cases is getting more support / goodies than the general release version.

Case-and-Point: This theme rocks, however, only works with RC??

I might also add a plug for the author.  One of the few theme developers who understand or have the know-how to validate.


Bottom-line-observation.  Beta releases are getting more attention as far as addons than general releases.

Well, RC2 isn't a true Beta, it's a release candidate. It is very stable and has only a few minor bugs. With the huge number of new features and improvements it has over 1.0.x, and because it's stable and has been released for over 4 months, most people are happy to use and develop mod and themes for it.
