I installed SMF via FTP, now what?

If this question has already been answered, I apologize for asking it again. Please just point me to the page so I can read all about it. So, on with my dilemma! I read about installing SMF. I downloaded SMF_1-0-7_install, unzipped the file, and uploaded all of the files (with the exception of read me) to the web site's /public_HTML/ file, in a folder named "Forum," via FTP. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do now. I tried to access the files I uploaded, but I wasn't able to. I am using Joomla, via Fantisco. Am I supposed to remove the files from the site via FTP, and install SMF via fantisco? (Fantisco is an automated script installer.) So, I'm stuck. Would someone please help me with this?

Thank you in advance,
Jenni

Put the address of 'install.php' into your browser.

So, for example, to install here, you'd put in:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/install.php

For yours, it'd most likely be something like:
http://www.url.com/forum/install.php

Fantastico is a way through cPanel to automate the installation of pre-packaged programs. SMF is one of those, but you don't have to use Fantastico.

Does it matter if I install it via FTP or via Fantisco? I installed it via Fantisco, and now my web page's header is a bunch of lines that are telling me I have all these errors on lines in php files. Should I uninstall it via fantisco, and re install it via FTP?

I much prefer an FTP installation...   especially if you plan to bridge SMF to Joomla.

I would say yes... uninstall the fantastico SMF installation.
Install SMF 1.1RC2 via FTP and then run bridge v1.1.4

That's one way you can do it.

It doesn't really matter, honestly. Doing if via FTP gives you manual control and doing it via Fantastico just allows you to do it more automatically. Personally, I only install things via FTP.

If you're having problems, and you want to uninstall it, you can always uninstall via FTP or Fantastico (Fantastico first). If you want to do it via FTP, just delete everything out of the 'forum' folder on your server and upload it via FTP and run install.php like I mentioned before.

just a note as to a reason behind my suggestion.   If you plan to bridge SMF and Joomla, there are certain configuration difficulties that using Fantastico will require work-arounds...

Yes, if you want to bridge it, it'd be best to use FTP.

Hi all, Thanks a bunch for your help and advice. I have successfully installed the SMF forum! However, when I installed the bridge, everything went wrong. At first my web page wouldn't load at all, so I unpublished the modules and components that had line errors in the php, then the forum link wouldn't work properly, so I unpublished the mambot that had link errors in the php. And now my forum works like a charm, but I have no bridge to cross. Am I supposed to do something to these .php files, or should the bridge work immediately after installing it to my site (via joomla)? I'm new to all of this, but I'm willing to work at it with the help of someone who knows what they're doing. The last time I tried to change lines in a php file, I messed the entire thing up and someone had to fix it for me. I don't want a repeat of that. So if anyone understood the problems I am having, I would so appreciate some assistance.

Thank you again in advance,
Jenni

unpublishing things randomly doesn't help...

you must have certain things installed and running to bridge joomla and smf
1- Install the smf bridge component (use 1.1.4 for version 1.1RC2 of SMF)
2- this will install com_smf, com_smf_registration, mod_smf_login and bot_systemheader)
3- configure com_smf with the PATH to your forum (this is NOT a URL... this is a PATH) and other options.
4- configure mod_smf_login

questions / things for you to check:

1- what version of the bridge did you attempt to install?
2- turn OFF compressed output in SMF.
3- Turn OFF SEO in SMF

then take any questions over to the mambo/joomla discussion board here on simplemachines.org and don't forget to read the combined readme sticky post!

Alright, I uninstalled and re-installed the mentioned files so I would be starting fresh.
I have successfully installed com_smf, com_smf_registration, mod_smf_login, and bot_systenheader

Now I'm lost. When I enter the web page's URL, I get this message:

Warning: smf_header_include(../forum/SSI.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/missitog/public_html/jacobsportal/mambots/system/SMF_header_include.php on line 63

Fatal error: smf_header_include(): Failed opening required '../forum/SSI.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/missitog/public_html/jacobsportal/mambots/system/SMF_header_include.php on line 63

When you say configure com_smf with the PATH and other options, what do you mean by this? How do I do this? Do I do this in Joomla, or do I do this offline and update it via FTP?
And will I configure mod_smf_login the same way as com_smf?

Thank you again for your help.

configure in joomla Admin...   go to components > smf - bridge

the PATH is something like /home/username/public_html/forum
a URL is http://site.com/forum

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I did as you said and now my web site will load.
However, my site is loading with the following messages:

What do I now need to do to fix all of that?
Thank you so very much for all of your help, you're a site savor!

JenniAnn

(P.S.) I am trying to install version 1.1.4 of the bridge onto Joomla 1.0.7

Kindred

ah....

1- make sure you did not add any code into the<head> section of your joomla template.
2- run the mambo cleanup mod package from goosemoose (available in the mod section here)
