How to upgrade forum from Ver. 1.0.7 to the latest version.

And the important thing to do first is to backup my curent forum, how can I do that?

appreciate any help  i can get.

Upgrading to 1.1 RC2 is easy, and you will be able to backup the database automatically when you run upgrade.php...

First, put your board in maintenance mode so users don't start posting or doing other things while you're uploading files.
Next, download smf_1-1-rc2_upgrade.zip from the download page and extract all the files to your computer.
Third, upload all the files to your server via FTP, overwriting the existing ones.
Finally, run upgrade.php - this can be done by going to http://www.yoursite.com/smf/upgrade.php (replace http://www.yoursite.com/smf with the actual URL to your board). You will probably be asked to enter FTP info so SMF can chmod the appropriate files - go ahead and do this as it's easier than spending 15 or 20 minutes trying to figure out which files need to be chmodded to 777 for the upgrade to work.

When you are asked, check the box to put the board in maintenance mode during the upgrade and the box to backup your tables. From there you should be able to let the upgrade run by itself (after you click the button the first time). Make sure you chmod upgrade.php to 777 as well so you can have it automatically delete itself when you're done.
