How to open a .mod file

Hi,

I'm an extreme newbie and I'm attempting to install the smf/joomla bridge (version 3.19a_stable).  I'm good at following instructions but so far, I've seemed to run into every problem possible getting smf installed/up/running.  I should state that I do have both SMF 1.0.7 and Joomla 1.0.8 installed and running well.

I'm at step 1 in the bridge install.  I uploaded the package and got the error message stating that safe mode is in effect (even though I had already changed all the permissions to all the files in the sources folder to read/write/execute - 777 before I began to try to avoid this situation).  So I did upload the MOS_SMF.php to the sources folder and I'm at the step where I make changes to the files as it says in the mambo.mod file.  Problem is, I have do idea how to open and read that file.  Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

You can just right-click on the file and open it with notepad or something like that.
