Basic quick questions about RC2

I'm new to SMF, I installed SMF from my hosting provider's Fantastico.
I have SMF 1.0.7 but I've noticed some mods are only for 1.1 RC2
what is this 1.1 RC2?
What is different about it from SMF 1.0.7?
Is it something I should upgrade my site to?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated
