Update thru PackageManager failed.

I seem to be having problems with the patch SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update, step taken were.

Admin -> Packages -> Browse Packages -> Apply Mod -> Proceed ftp update.

this is the message I get at the last stage.

"Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager."

I tried 707 600 755 on all files and dirs within the smf folder and still I get the same error message.
If I understand the patch right write access is needed to Sources/ Themes/ and Packages/ and these should be  chmod 755 or 707, can someone clarify ?

777 seems to be the norm, try that instead of 707
