HELP with 1and1 hosting

SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
i have been trying to install smf on 1and1 using dreamweaver mx as my ftp, i have read all the installation file and forum help i could find on the subject and have had no luck. i have transfered all the files to my host, and set up a database in the mySql admin section, getting the db name username and password, but when i input these into the install page i get a error message
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
has anyone else had the same problem? i think the problem is with my host as i also tried to set up phpbb (another forum software) and got a similar message. any help would be much appreciated.

you should really use an ftp program to upload your files.
www.download.com has many free ftp programs you can get.
could be the files aren't being uploaded properly.

Thenks for the help, but i downloaded a new ftp reloaded all the files checked there chmod setting were correct, but still got the same message. any other ideas are very welcome cos i have none. dose anyone use 1and1?

dont know about 1and1 but i know a coup,le different hosts i have used, when it came to setting up the mysql database i used either localhost or i used the actual server, like with powweb it was similiar to mysql10.powweb.com because they wouldn't let you use localhost. so basically it looked like this

localhost OR mysql10.powweb.com
mysql database name
mysql database username
mysql database password

like i said, i dont know about 1and1 but i would think it would be similiar.

You need to adjust your MySQL server settings. You have your db server settings as localhost, and 1&1 doesn't use the same server for both web and db. WHen you create a database through your admin, you should get the server it is on. It will look like dbXXX.perfora.net. The XXX will be a three-digit number. Use this as your sql server.

Most (good) hosting companies keep the database and web servers separate. It helps with load configurations and also security (you can't access the db servers except from the web servers, making direct attacks impossible).
