I've just downloaded the smf_1-0-7_install[1][1].tar.gz file from the downloads page, and it unzipped to a .tar file, and that unzipped to all the files as it should do. It must be your end!

Still no answer?

It's really annoying!

You are not being helpful, and you haven't answered the question yet.
Have you tried with another browser excpet your primary one?
Have you tried from different computers?
Because the downloads are just fine, and the problem is on your side.
People told already that they can download the files just fine, I did it right now again and they are ok.
You demand an answer but don't show the smallest sign of cooperation.
I will update all my mods in the next few weeks. Thanks for your patience.

Agreed, demanding something is never the best way to go, if you say that the tar.gz's are fine, then use those instead, it doesnt matter which file type you use, you're going to get SMF regardless.

I'll just state that they all work for me (FF1.5.0.4)

What files are you trying to download?
What browser (version) are you using?
What software is actually downloading the files?

Yakuza

Just downloaded some mods and last smf version available in zip format and all seems ok (firefox here).

Downloads are working for me also. No problems with IE 6

Ok, i looked more, and the problem is only on the zip downloads on your site with opera (9).

zip downloaded elsewhere have no problems, so i'm astonished of this curious problem...

You're right, we'll investigate the issue.

Thanks for reporting this, but for future reference: please give us as much details as possible. That helps us to find and fix issues a lot quicker.

GravuTrad

Yes, you're right, that's my fault.

I promise to do more attention...

I will follow this post to see if you'll find the source of the pb...(maybe opera himself? or options used by it?)

Trekkie101

What operating system?

Also what archive program are you using?

All of the above work for me, can you download it to a place you havent ever before, a music folder or something, but download it using IE or Firefox if thats not too much hassle :)

GravuTrad

Windows XP and Winrar 3.51...

Try it with opera...the problem to solve for me is only with opera like tim seems to say...(but some friends got too with ie and firefox, not me, but them yes...)

So that's why it's very strange...

Strange?

I've just downloaded a copy of smf 1.1rc2 in zip format and when I enter the zip archive and a new file is inside smf_1-1-rc2_install without any extension, I renamed to .gz and it worked, but maybe you would like to know, maybe some folks don't figure that out.
Remaker - My blog

dschwab9

So you're saying there was a .gz inside a .zip?   And the actual contents were inside the .gz?

Yes. And I've also downloaded that file twice , so I can be sure of that.

Harro

Just tried the ones that didn't work for you.
They do work for me.
Am also using Opera 9 and winrar 3.50

Remaker

I've tried again download the files with opera 9, latest version of FireFox and IE 6 and strange things happen...

Opera 9 - downloads but gives error at finish, but still saves file and extracting contents of zip file works, with the same problem I've encountered before on IE 6. (a new .gz file without extension inside).

IE 6 - same thing, but no error.

FireFox - downloads ok, and strangely when I extract the contents of the archive it's ok, no more .gz file. ?

P.S.: I even tried a new archive extractor, not that this matters but for testing.

GravuTrad

Question to Remaker, what is your firewall please? (maybe problems between server and firewalls?)

Really lots of users i known experiment this problem...

They test with ie, firefox and opera, and with activation and desactivation of firewalls...
Certains are ok with ie and firewall desactivated only, and not other..

Really strange all this....
IP problem maybe?

I don't know for now...

I don't think this comes from the client side(my side). It's something from the server, obviously.
If something on my side was wrong than , wouldn't that cause problems on all downloads? Not just this one.. . and also, this is quite strange, it's like a coding mistake or something because it's quite illogical what's happening.

GravuTrad

I don't know...

It's a really strange thing cause sometimes the download work!

I tested lots of times and somes times download is ok...

So bandwith quality problem? dslam? strange all this...

i ahev downloaded SMF 1.1 RC2 a couple of times from this website and it worked fine but today i needed another copy but after two times i get the same error when i unzip it on my machine.
here is the link from where i am downloading the package SMF 1.1 RC2 exactly.

Alynn

I am also experiencing the problem downloading the 1.07 forum .zip file, each time it says that the archive is corrupted.

Browsers Tried: MSN 9.0, Yahoo Browser (both use IE 6 core) and IE 6 directly.
OS Windows XP Home, using default XP zip extractor.

The same happens for SMF 1.1RC2 zip downloads.

Both happens regardless of where I save it.

I hope this helps in locking down the problem.

atinsley

I am also having the same problems with the downloads.

Downloading the .zip files
Two different machines, different networks
Both running WinXP Pro and IE6

Used WinZip, WinRar and the one built into XP

The problems are all the same, archive files are corrupt.

Okay, I ran a test getting "smf_1-0-7_install.zip"from the site.

  • Wget 1.10.1: OK
  • cURL 7.15.4: OK
  • FireFox 1.5.0.6:OK
  • Opera 9.00: OK
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 (Windows XP Pro): BAD

The IE downoad stops short of full size by 118,057 bytes.

Looking at the raw file, the IE download has some garbage (11 bytes) at the beginning before the magic (PK) sequence and it cuts off short before the end.

For others experiencing this issue, lets see if we can narrow down some stuff. Here are the md5sums for both the good and bad version of this file. If you get a bad version, see if your md5sum matches mine. If it does, at least there is some consistency that can be looked into:

Good copy (1152649 bytes):
e2bac43ca536169d027a08143d57e3f7 *smf_1-0-7_install-ff.zip

Bad copy (1034592 bytes):
b280236bc61c81d8f917731f0fca568f *smf_1-0-7_install-ie.zip

I believe I fixed this today - sorry for the delay.

Out of curiosity, what was going on? Might help those of us that run into the same problem on our own sites.

Well - at first I thought it was gz-compress so disabled that and it fixed the zips - then that seemed to break the tar.gz for some unknown reason. What I actually ended up doing was removing the code which sent zip files as application/zip and instead just send it as a octlet stream like the rest.

Just a thought and suggestion.
What about using the self extracting rar file or just a rar wrapper?
Zip's are known to have cross platform trouble, MS based host servers are #1 offenders.

Many times it's the ISP's or local user's anitiviri.
Is SMF's Webhost using Zend? If so Readers' Comments
Even some firewalls can cause problems.

I've also noticed RedHat's Fedora uses a torrent system (which takes a big load off their servers)
that allows multiple crc checks from each seeder. Even here they wrap zip files in a rar to
avoid corruptions. This seems to be the future of Linux based file transfers.

edit: I've had no problem- Xp pro FF Ie and used ssh putty.exe to D/L as well.

I believe RAR is restricted in source (decoder source is free, but you are not allowed to use it to make an encoder) and the unrar tool for Linux only works on v2 files or below.

rar is a nasty format, especially when other FOSS formats are availiable. But in anycase, a self-extracting file would cause far more troubles as we'd need to make one for every OS.

Ok, i tested personnally, and all is correct for the result.

Only one thing: why the download is marked "length and time" unknown?

maybe your workaround is the cause of this...
