First Time Install Help Needed to then do conversion

SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
I have uploaded the files to my webspace

I run the install.php script and no matter what I do in the first screen (details) I get

Cannot connect to the MySQL database server with the supplied data.

If you are not sure about what to type in, please contact your host.
Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)
Click here to try this step again.

I already have a database paid for which I don't want to delete as I will lose all the data. I was hoping to install SMF then do a conversion after install as is listed elsewhere in the support community here.

I have a log in name for my account and have also setup a database user, however no matter what details I seem to put in I cannot connect and always get the above error.

my database name is called "vmkforum" so am putting this in.
I left the server name as localhost although these details are in my MY SQL summary screen

Database Name Server Name IP Address       
vmkforum         mysql226      (not listed here for security)

So how do I get past this part of the install as I am tearing my hair out now

It is very likely the server isn't "localhost". The servername is probably what is listed on that summary screen. If you don't have the full name, try using the IP.
