An Error Has Occurred!
You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

I can't figure this one out.

Thanks for your quick response. IX hosting is my current service. I actually called them and they got the files and folders chmod to 777. So this problem is solved. On the other hand, one thing I recently noticed is the following.

Please tell me that this can be fixed without crashing my forum!  :( I installed several mods compatible with 1.1 RC2 but when I uninstalled them this is what I got!

Well I don't recognise "old_index.template.php"
Normally I would expect to see a back-up file called "index.template.php.bak"

Did you upgrade, then uninstall the mods? Or did you uninstall the mods and then upgrade?

I happen to choose the wrong installation file for one of the templates (older version). I uninstalled it and then installed the most recent. That fixed the problem.

Thanks for offering your help. Much appreciated.  :)
