SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
Hi,

Ok, I have decided to install an SMF forum on my site but I really do not have a clue where to start  :'( , I am extremely non technical and do not understand the stuff about servers and mysql or any of that so it looks like a foreign language to me.

Here's what I know:
*I have the file smf_1-0-7_install
*I use the ftp program "smartftp"
*I have a website ready for the forum

Here's what I need help with:
*Does the file smf_1-0-7_install need to be unzipped or do I upload the way it was when I downloaded it?
*Will smartftp change the permissions or do I need to do it?
*In the install area of your manual, you go over things like "mysql server name" and "mysql username" but I do not know what these are or how to find out about them?
*Do I need to sort out all the mysql things before uploading and trying to install the forum?

Sorry for all the questions, it's just I really do not know about these things.

Thanks a lot.

If you have access to cpanel, you could install SMF very simple via "fantastico".
So you should check that first.

Things you need to do when installing:
1. upload smf_1-0-7_install to your website and unzip(Or you could upload the unzipped files).

2. you need to chmod settings.php and attachements to 755 and 777.
You can do that with smartftp probably(I don't use it) by right click on those items and selecting chmod.(or by console just write this command: chmod 755 settings.php and chmod 755 attachements

3. You need to create a mysql database. Use your website control panel. Also create an user account that has access to the newly created database. If you don't have access to something like this, a mysql control panel or something try asking your host to create a database and give you access.

4. run install.php in the root folder of php via browser to install. (You need to input there just the database name you newly create and the new user account that has access to that database.

Again: The simplest way to install smf is via Fantastico in Cpanel, and I'm sure you have that because most of the websites today have cpanel by default.(paid hosting though).

I hope this helps. ;)
