No wbb/Burning Board converter has been written yet.  You could, however, try converting from it to phpBB and then to SMF.

Hi there, I just got referred here by a stranger sitting next to me :D. I'm running a wBB, and I was interested in a convertor as well. SMF seems like a nice forum with more features than wBB1.2, and since I've stumbled upon some limitations, I'd like to switch over. Converting to phpBB first and then to SMF would be a major hassle, I don't know if it'd work out, and I don't know if the featuresets line up well (in other words some user/post data being lost in the conversion?). That, and I don't know if I wish to throw out that much effort for a forum I've never seen or used before (which of course was the same to say with wBB, but the easy install & familiar vB2 clone interface made it all really easy to get into). Now I'm wondering, would someone write a convertor for it if I promised I'd use SMF for my forum if the install went right? ;)

I believe we've already got a "basic" converter, but it only converts over the members and messages, not polls etc. I can post it later tonight if you want to try that out first?

Well, basically backupping, importing, or creating databases has to be done by my admin, as permissions are kinda messed up in that field. If you could tell me what exactly I need to do to import a wBB forum on another location (as you can understand, I don't wish to generate any forum downtime because of a test), then I can see what I can do myself. I hope I'm not being too much of a picky bother :-X.

Thanks for the quick & helpful reply. I'm starting to like this place already :P.

Edit: This bothers me as well.

I do have members with accented usernames. Would they be converted right?

Ummm... you don't need to do anything with you wbb install. The converter will not TOUCH the install, but make a SMF version of it. Whilst waiting for me to provide a converter why not install a blank version of SMF somewhere on your server to play with? The converter, when run, will import all your current members and topics into that SMF install, your old board will continue to function fine. This means that only once you are happy with SMF do you need to close the old board down.

IIRC existing members names will be converted fine.

QuoteThe installer was unable to access the "smf" database. With some hosts, you have to create the database in your administration panel before SMF can use it. Some also add prefixes - like your username - to your database names.
As expected. I will now try to contact my admin to see if he's available for help.

Technically, this was only a limitation in previous versions; you can register with most any username now, for internationalization reasons.

Last I checked, the converter... *ran*.  I don't know that it converted everything, though :/.

Attached is the converter. See how it goes for you and let us know!

Still no new db. I don't like the idea of something I don't know poking in my existing one. But as soon as it works I'll try, thanks!

Makes sense. You need to make sure though that the db user who can see the SMF database can ALSO see the other one though. You can give it permission only to SELECT in your existing DB if you wish but they must be able to see it to retrieve the data!

The user login will be the same, but the database will be different. That is, if things all work out.

mf

Okay, now the board works, but the convertor doesn't. The convertor wants wBB 2, while that is the paid version. WBB 1.2 is the free version, and the convertor isn't compatible with it.

Grudge

IS 1.2 this:

If so I may see if I can look over it and see what the difference is.

That does look identical to the way my forum looked before I started customizing it. I think they've simply changed the name from "1.2" to "Lite 1.0". It doesn't have much features, so it should be easy to write a convertor.

In the meantime, while waiting for your reply, I've been doing some work of my own ;D.

Set up basic forum preferences
Add 100 BOFH excuses
Remove "News:" before the BOFH excuse
Make the BOFH excuse a small font
Get members list in the top menu instead of below the forums above the statistics crap
Make a temporary button image for the members list until I get to making the new theme
Get rid of the SMF logo left top and replace it with the usual strange blend phrase
Get rid of the powered by MySQL, PHP, and W3C compatible crap
Change "on: <date, time>" to "posted: <date, time>"
Set charset to UTF-8
Make a new theme [in progress]
Change the user panel phrases (Hey, mf, you have 0 messages, 0 are new. <-- sucks) [in progress]
Set up censoring for people that prefer it [in progress]

;)

So far, stuff's easy to customize. I like it! :)

Grudge

Yea, as I said though the converter will most likely *only* handle converting members and topics. If I can find the time I may try to do polls and instant messages. I'll try take a look at it after work tonight although I can make no promises :)

Thanks! :) Polls aren't very important, though instant messages are.
