I know that you can make it so that you have to approve each member before the member is added....

Can you plz, plz, plz, plz, plz--a million times  add a feature where you can make it so each post can be reviewed before it is displayed. I use SMF for my school "shoutout" but we have to have the students email us their post, review it, then manually type it in. I would really appreciate if you would add this feature.

Thank you.

you could use Visual Warning / Post Moderation mod by Grudge, it lets you do just that

you'd only need make an extra modification to have your new members post moderated by default probably

of if you're approving each account, do it by hand, but it could be automated

His site is down  >:(  :-[

Is there anywhere else I can get it?

Oldiesmann

Actually, his site isn't down - your server is in Safe Mode and he hasn't configured his package server for the safe mode redirection functionality (if the server is in safe mode, it goes to {urlofserver}?package-list&referer={urlofyourboard} instead of listing the files...). I've emailed it to you.

OMG! I want this feature too, I have tried to get it before. The MOD is crap, and I think that since they already wrote some code to make it where you have to approve members, some of it would just be copy and paste. I REALLY NEED THIS. PLEASE CREATE IT, how hard can it be?

justasimpleuser

That is what I was saying, and the MOD install doesnt work for me cause I am on a safe mode server.  :(  Please just build it in

newbie5757

Well, for me the MOD is not want I want....it may work for some but not me. I sure wish they would add this, I desperately need it before August 28th.  ::)

justasimpleuser

Well, i need mine a little sooner, but....

Anyway, quoting grude "if there is a chance someone will need it, it should be a setting". I definetly think a lot of people would use it if there was a feature built it. I mean, afterall, Yahoo groups gets alot of people to use their forums because the Moderator can make it to where each message has to be approved.

I dont know, I just think that a lot of people would use it, I and someone else I know needs it--and it wouldnt be that hard.  PLUS I would definetely buy charter membership if this was built it.

Cheers newbie5757, responses like that really motivate people like myself to write MODs. I mean that is really very useful isn't it? At the very least maybe some reasons WHY you think it's crap so that it can be approved? I'm fully aware that it needs to be changed, but the only reason I see for that is because SMF now sorts by message ID and not message time - which causes problems on the MOD.

Also - I hope you are using the post moderation MOD and *not* the visual warning one - as the post moderation one has all the other stuff removed.

As for having this built in, quoting me is not in the same context - when I said about settings being changable in that case I was talking about a setting which if not changable would mean the forum plain wouldn't work correctly - this is *not* the same ballpark. Maybe one day this will be built in - maybe not. And for the record it is not easy to add this feature in - it's a huge change in the code. To do it properly would involve changing practically ALL the message queries, adding permissions for approving messages, changing the index template, adding new fields to the members and messages table. Adding an approval interface. Handle polls/calendar events that need to be approved. Adding new settings to cater for various options. Probably adding options to make a whole board post moderated. All of this whilst at the same time not introducing any bugs? Think about it...

I'm sorry Grudge, it sorta came out wrong, what I meant is that it doesnt work for me cause of my host, and gives me all types of errors trying to install. I was using the Visual Warning, because on your Mod server it says that you sholdnt download it cause it was in beta.

justasimpleuser

I haev the PHP in safe mode and that is why it doesnt work for me. I still think that people would use it. Just look at how many Yahoo groups they ahve attracted because of this feature.

newyork - I understand what you're saying... You're getting lots of "SAFE MODE restriction is in effect - the script whose uid is xxx is not allowed to access /path/to/smf/Packages/temp owned by yyy" errors right? This is because the package manager creates a temporary folder on the server (which is "owned" by Apache) and extracts all the files in the tar.gz file to the temp folder, does what it needs to with them and then deletes that folder. Because safe mode won't allow scripts to access files or folders that don't have the same owner, you're getting these errors. You will have to install the mod by hand in order for it to work. Here's how you do that:

extract all the files in the tar.gz file to your computer and open the .mod file in a text editor (such as notepad or wordpad). Then download any files from your server that are needed for this mod by looking at the <edit file> tags...

Follow the steps in the .mod file to modify these files and then upload them to your server again.

Next, open up the db modification file, and add
include_once('Settings.php');
include_once('Sources/Querystring.php');

at the beginning of the file right after all the comments and before any "global" statements.

Then upload the dbmod file to your server and run it, then delete it from your server.

Unfortunately, this can be a pain, but that's how you have to do it because of that darn Safe Mode restriction. You can also use Boardmod to modify the code for you - just create an "SMF" folder in the "Mods" directory, and put the mod file in that folder...

Still wont work, I must be really stupid or doing something wrong. If anyone thinks they can help me further with the installation of this mod, please let me know.

Grudge

newyork4me - I recommend you wait for the next version of SMF. It won't be *that* long and there are some more fixes to the package manager plus I know at least one of my post moderation bugs has been a bit buggy and those will be resolved for the next beta too.
