On my own machine, I host several websites
I run Windows XP
plenty of power and processor speed

I currently run 4 other YabbSE databases. (have for years)
brought on 2 new sites and thought I would install SMF

but both sites bring MySQL to its knees. and ultimately my computer

What would you need to assist with this problem?

Thanks

What version are you running, and what whos in your MySQL processlist?

MySQL 5.0                  Windows install zip

and I am unclear as to your next question

MySQL 5 will probably cause all sorts of problems.

I fully expect SMF to crash on MySQL 5.  It has by no means been tested with it, and MySQL 5 is still in a very unstable phase.

ummmm
Interesting.....

after checking I did note that phpinfo reports MySQL as ver 3.23.49

but my install is indeed the 5.0alpha

So my choices are revert to MySQL 4.1 or
run YabbSE until SMF supports MySQL 5.0

haha..if anyone asks...let them know YabbSE works great with 5.0.

oh what to do...
well, I think...I will just ..umm...go get drunk and decide tomorrow...

Thanks for your help :)

Well,

I didnt go get drunk...decided to install MySQL 4.1
and see if problem persists.

Thanks again

You could always get drunk and install MySQL 4.1 ;)

I would also consider upgrading to the XP Pro version, over the XP Home Edition. The Pro very is much more functional, and stable.

Actually, I say something like that here I think:

(I plan to write a linux version soon by the way ;).)

Home just doesn't handle memory, resources, and network access as well.  On purpose.  Those bums.

The problem I had with Pro

Is by design (I think), it is setup to host one website.  I run 7 and could never get it to function properly.  With Home Edition, its much easier to fool and work with. I use VNC instead of Remote Desktop, which allows me to share my system with anyone, even MAC users.

Though Home Edition doesnt have IIS, I am quite content not to use ASP and will stick with my PHP

If I were going to upgrade to anything.  I would probably go Linux.  I just dont know enough about Linux, to do that yet.

In some cases I find less is better

Are you running Apache 2?

You may find the tutorial I linked to helpful... it outlines all the basic stuff you need to do, and as I said I'm going to write a linux one soon. (which you might be interested in.)

If you're on Pro and you run Apache 2, you don't get the limit.  The limit is there to force you to buy a server edition to host a web server... not that much more than pro, and 2003 Server is nice.

Oh, and you can have ASP on Linux/Apache.... not that you'd want to :P.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!

Now I am in a real state of affairs.....

Well, as I said...I remained sober...and I tried to convert MySQL database from 5.0 to 4.1

ummm, next to impossible..it seems you can only move forward and not back
so I installed MySQL 4.1
moved my datafiles into place (hoping for the best)
started it up and...

While I did run SMF completely successfully with the MySQL 4.1
and all of my other files remained operational

and the old YabbSE I thought at first was working properly....
the settings all remained..
my members were all there...
but only a handful of the posts...though it reported the totals.

it also errored on my PMs showing 7000000000000.E*1 etc for messages

so now I presume I must do the following:

1. dump my old YabbSE database using the SMF upgrade program
2. convert MySql 5.0  back to MySql 4.1
3. then install SMF

I wonder if this will work

KarterJK

LOL!!!!

Well..Thank you all with all of your help

Yes, got them all up and running...

and it even converted my old template...thats amazing!!!!!!!!

Is it safe to install SMF if the version of MySql is 3.23.56?

Perfectly safe, just wont run as quick as it would on MySQL 4 but it will still be fast.
