Hello again and another question:

Does/will SMF have a copy function for threads besides move? It would be very handy indeed, especially when there is a need for sharing certain threads on boards with different access permissions. 8)

I like this idea.  Usually I use a link, but as you point out, different access permissions would prevent some from viewing.

This won't happen for 1.0, but I have seen time and time again where this would be useful and could be convinced that this is a "core" feature.

Often times I find a person starts a thread that ends up going in two different directions.  Spliting is not always going to work because maybe the first topic has important info for both directions.  There have been times I would have copied the entire thread and then just edited each one to make it fit.  I tihnk that didn't make sense... except to me.  sorry.

long story short... good idea!

do you always talk yourself into corners Jack R. Abbit?

Oh, and I wouldn't mind seeing this option available for just posts either...

I understood what you said Jack, I think it could be useful that way.

So when you copy a thread do both copies get updated as new replies are added?

I'm not real sure how the copy thread would work, but to copy a post wouldn't matter.  I'd love to see a copy post option

Anguz

David, I don't think that's the case, rather they'd be independent from each other and go their own ways.

Does that make sense though?  Should both options be presented?

I believe so.

Grudge

Yes. I like the idea of it being like a "dummy link". the thread exists in only one form, and is linked to "a board". The other instances are just dummy links to that thread. So basically, it is the same in all instances, posting in the thread in one board shows up in all. Although it would be easy enough to do both I guess.
I'm only a half geek really...

Jack.R.Abbit™

that is an option as well... and has been dscussed somewhere on this board.. making threads that exist in more than one board.  The two could go hand in hand.  Making a copy could do either.

Anguz

But they are different things, making a copy leaves two identical topics, while having a topic that can be accessed in many boards is just one topic still. So fot the latter, I wouldn't label it as making a copy, really. Although they're similar features, they are pretty different. I'm all for having both features, just wanted to express my thought on the naming thing. :)

Cool I like this idea ;)

They are different things. What I meant at the original post was plain copying as opposed to what we migh call "mirroring". Both functions would add much to SMF, IMO. :)

yes different... yet similar.

Kamil

Hi there,

sorry for bumping this old one, but is there any chance we see a copy-thread feature in the near future ?

TIA for answering,

Kâmil

Unfortunately this topic got buried and didn't get bumped in time for 1.1... We'll keep it in mind for 1.2 though.
