As someone who has never got Package Manager to work, never mind how many combinations of paths and chmod settings I have used, and who has had to install all my mods manually, I thought it might be interesting to see how common or not my problem is.

How many othes have never been able to get beyond SMF's equivalent of Microsoft's "blue screen of death":

QuoteSome of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager.

That message means stuff isn't chmod'd correctly.  Try chmod'ing everything to 777 or 755, whatever your host allows, and see if it works.  The Package Manager works, there's just something wrong on your end of things.

I have ever folder from /forum down chmoded to 777 and it still doesn't work!

Unless doing it via Dreamweaver doesn't work?

NEMINI

is there a direcotry called temp inside the Packages directory? and is it chmod 777?
signatures are boring.

I'm in the same boat with trying to upload the Ad Management mod :(. Everything is set to 777, not in safe mode, have a temp folder in Packages etc etc.

AndyII

strange stuff here
I have installed dozens of smf/tp combos and now Im getting
QuoteYou cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable
Same servers, same packages, i did put in a 'temp' folder and proceeded with the tp install, after success (?), no tp showing, all files were written to the 'temp' folder I manually put in, but TP not really installed,
checked pathing, permissions, even did a clean install, nothing worked, also checked who really owed the files/folders and they belonged to the user.
A while back I would have this problem but only if SMF was in public folder and moving it to a sub folder cured the problem (only concerning the Package Manager) and installing things such as TP or other packages.
a lot of folks install in this manner anyway in the usual "forum" subfolder

most of the time it works without a hitch, however on other occasions mods fail the pre application check, always in modifications.english.php

just make sure to reset your permissions to their original levels afterwards.

Dragooon, you should generally only chmod those files that you need edited at one time.  I feel it is best to avoid reccommending users make their files writeable by all.  What should be happening is hosts should be implementing suExec properly, but the cheap hosts do not, thus many of the problems with the package manager, permissions, and file ownership that you see as 'the package manager not working'.

Sorry to say, the package manager won't work if your host's system doens't let it.
