Hey guys, I've been in need of some help since I can't figure this out. I'm not sure if this has been addressed here before, it's a massive forum, but on my forum, which is located here... I'm also not sure if this goes in this category, so please move it if it's in the wrong section :)

http://seanssite.dyndns.org:85/forums/index.php

Many times when you're not logged in, the server will take around 8-9 seconds to generate the page (but the server CPU sits at 0% usage and the RAM still has a lot of free space, the server's HD isn't busy, etc), but when I'm logged in, it'll generate it in under a second and will load up instantly, and basically perform really nice. Now, this isn't that much of an annoyance, but on other forums that I go to where members there aren't registered on my forum, they say that it's kind of annoying when they want to look on my site for a topic that I post about. This has done this ever since I first installed SMF with just me on the forum.

I think this might be a problem with my PHP.ini file, or it could be that I'm not using an Apache-based software. For extra information, here's my server's specs (it's kind of a low end machine, no one uses it so it's my web server)

Processor: Intel Pentium III ~500 Mhz
RAM: 128MB, 48% free
OS: Windows 2000 Professional
Web Server software: NetworkActiv 3.5
PHP Version: 5.2.3
MySQL Version: 5.0.27-community-nt
Connectivity: 768K Upstream DSL connection (the server is on a router, and works off of a 108Mbps wireless connection that is usually at 95-100% strength)

Any other information I missed, just let me know.

Also, if the fix needs any PHP work done on it, I'm not skilled with PHP code so please help me with it.

Hi,

In your server settings, in SMF admin, disable "Hostname Lookups", and your forum will speed up substantially.

Thanks, that seemed to have helped a lot. What did the hostname lookup have to do with the guest thing anyways? Can someone explain that to me?

Christian A. Herrnboeck

Hostname lookup queries a DNS server when you make the post, this takes a couple seconds, and thus causes the page to seem to "hang" while it waits for a response from the DNS server.

Of course, now you only have an IP address, and not username@<mask>.<isp>.<tld> when you check who posted something ;)

I use SMF 1.1.3 but I can't find that entry. I looked on the server settings, feature configraution and caching  page and can't see it.

So where can I find "Hostname Lookups" because I have the same problem.

Thanks

EDIT: already solved it, see next post.

This is false. The correct location is Configuration / Features and Options / Layout and Options
