PNG thumbnails?

Hi all. Is there any way to change image attachment thumbnails from PNG  to JPG? (search didn't reveal anything)

I chose to have really big thumbnails for my attached images, but it generates PNG, so they're huge (like 200k) for a 512x400 thumbnail.

Admin -> Attachments and Avatars -> Avatar Settings -> uncheck "Use PNG for resized avatars?".

Both avatars and attachments share the same setting. I'm not sure why. I do think JPEG is much better for thumbnails, almost in any case.
