Blank/empty posts caused by smileys ?

Hi all, i think i've found a bug in my 1.1.4 smf forum.

I saw some blank posts on my forum, but when you click modify, you see the content of the post. These blank posts have unique attributes, they are quoting someone and they are using alot of smilies in a row consecutively.

Well, after MANY experiments testing out all sorts of possibilities, I think I found what causes it exactly. These are the things you need to make a blank post.

1. Quote someone
2. Input more than 11 smilies inside the quote or outside the quote. Smilies do not have to be in consecutively arrangement or same ones, they do not have to be in 1 line either. You are free to use any smilies and put it anywhere.
3. On the last line of your post, type a bunch of texts. You do not need spaces. Can be dasfsadfasdfasfasdfasdfasfasdfdasfasdfasdfasdfa.
Ok, here's the interesting part. The total characters of that text that is required to make the post blank will vary depending on how many smilies you exceeded the 11 smilies limit, AND how many page breaks you used to separate that text with the content. The more smilies you exceeded, the less the text is required. The more page breaks you used, the less the text is required also.

Is this a legitimate bug? had anyone else encountered or know a solution?

Many thanks

SleePy

I couldn't get it to occur :|
Is this only with SMF 1.1.4 or did you test it with 1.1.5 and SMF 2.0?

Did you try it on another site on a different server?
Did you try it here (Such as in our test board where I attempted it) :P

Maybe it is the custom theme I am using? It doesnt happen all the time but it does happen fairly often.

Oh well I can just ignore it.

I actually just ran into a similar issue, a user posted a message and it appeared blank to anyone that was logged in.  However if you were viewing the boards as a guest the post appeared fine.  There wasn't anything in the error logs related to it and it looked fine in the database as well.

I'm running SMF 1.1.5

mitcho

I'm using 1.1.4 - it still happens every now and then. the users on my forum are aware of it now though and tend to just post again if they notice it happening. i guess its just one of those things.

I could not reproduce it....

I quoted a post and inserted 20 smileys and on the next line i wrote dasfsadfasdfasfasdfasdfasfasdfdasfasdfasdfasdfa...

All worked fine...

mitcho

Yes i cannot reproduce either but it seems to happen occasionally - even in same circumstances its hard to reproduce.

I have this problem on my 1.1.5 site.  The posts are not lengthy, and they do not include smilies.  They occur whether Karma is active or not.

This issue appeared to resolve once my partner replaced my modified source/* files with a stock set.

So, the question is which modification is causing this.  Sounds like we need to compare notes...

Nimitz1061

OK - my partner, Denver informs me that this issue began after he installed a modification which allowed BBCode to take screen captures of websites.  Anyone else here using that one?

SleePy

Which bbc was that?

You should inform the author of this so they know about the possible bug in their mod.

I'll try to ID the exact mod today and post there.  However, I'm not sure this is the only possible cause for the issue and would like to hear some feedback from other reporters as well.

It would be nice to have an exact "don't do this" pointer , eh?

mitcho

i do not have that mod and still having the blank post issue.

metallica48423

does the post go blank only after editing it?  if so, are you using the auto embed video/audio clips mod?

Hello,

I am a member of a SMF powered forum which also suffers from the blank post issue. Here is what I know about it:

1/
It happens only to some users, me for ex.

2/
It always happens for the user in question if the message contains the  ;) smiley. Haven't tested every other smiley, but several of them seems to work.

3/
The version is 1.1.5 (I think so, it's not my forum)

4/
Clicking "quote" makes the text visible.

5/
Looking at the HTML output shows it is simply empty where the text should have been.

metallica48423

could you answer my post above?  Thanks

I have now found out that it is one of the Swedish language packs "smf_1-1-5_swedish" or "smf_1-1-5_swedish-utf8" which causes the blank posts. I write "one of" since both are installed and when choosing between them in the profile settings they both have the name "Swedish". When selecting on of them the posts are blank, when selecting the other they are not. Is there a way of knowing which one is selected?

mitcho

new information on the blank post issue. here is the exact text of a post which someone made that ended up showing blank. (but if you click the quote-reply button next to one of these blank posts you can see what text was entered:

please ignore the content of the message

Quote from: xxxxx link=topic=xxxxxx date=xxxxx
Hey All :(,

For some reason everything I do, something goes wrong!
and it just feels like when I don't do something wrong and make people happy, I get no thanks or thankyous :(

I just feel really tierd and sad and nothing is going right :( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

:'( :'( :'( :'(

as you can see a lot of smilies. still i think they are the cause of this problem.

There is definitely something strange going on.  I'm starting to see a few posts display as blank on my forum as well.  I'm using version 1.1.9.

Now, it's tough to pinpoint the problem.  At first I thought it was the smileys, because if I removed some the post would show.  But, it also might be a post length issue as well.  After removing the smileys the post was still blank after adding a lot more text.

Has anyone else made any headway on this issue?
