Dear ladies and gentleman,

I am proud to announce the SimplePortal 2.0 Beta 1 Public. After a long period of development time, our first and -I hope- the last beta is ready. First of all, I want to say that, SimplePortal 2.0 is feature-frozen from this time. We will just fix the bugs until the final release. Now let's see what's new in 2.0...

Block-based Blocking System

As you may already now, version 1.x was working with area-based blocks. You were just able to turn them on and off. Even you weren't able to change their positions. Now with the 2.0, SP supports block-based blocks. That means, every block has its own attributes such as label, function, parameters, status and position.

Custom Blocks Feature

With the version 2.0, we will be able to create unlimited amount of (I created over 200 while coding) custom blocks. They can be BBC, HTML or PHP blocks. Also every block has its own parameters. To give an example: You can create 2 Board News blocks and you can set them both to grab messages from different boards.

New Article System

SP 2.0 also comes with a brand new article system. You will not need the old Board News block anymore. With this new system, you can create article categories and you can add topics as articles into these categories. Every category has its own picture and you have the option to not to publish the articles of a specific category. Additionally these articles has its own approval feature. Your members will be able to make topics article, but -if you didn't give them Auto Article Approval permission- an admin should approve before it is published on index.

Article Page Index

Maybe you are a really active site, you have so many topics to publish on index. But listing 100 topics on index will cause to page to be 100m long and it would take 2 minutes for a user to get to the bottom. Then this feature is what you are looking for. You define how many pages to show in a single page and a page index is created.

New Permissions

Also with this version, you will be able to permit groups to admin the SP and make topics article. Additionally, you can give the permission of Auto Article Approval and the group's articles will not need approval.

These are the main features but not the all.

Now what we need is Beta Testers. I was planning to install a mantis but unfortunately I couldn't have time. So we are going to use the forum for bug reports. To report bugs:

If we come to a frequently asked question, when the SMF 2.x support would be added; we will start updating the mod for SMF 2.x right after the Beta 4 is released. As you all now, there will be dramatical changes in template files. So updating the mod for Beta 3 would be nonsense.

Hmm...I tested the article system and this is what I found:
1. On the frontpage, the article's category is displayed in the same box as the article itself...perhaps it should be in the box above the article's materials, along with poster's details? 
2. for a long continuous string of characters(eg. , a series of about 120 "a")...in the article, the box will expand and ruined the frontpage's display.

Actually in the place of "Test Category" there should be the category picture but because of that it cannot find it, it shows the alternate text. Have you defined a picture for that category?

1. You are fight that I did not define the picture for the category.  I will try with the assigned pictures.  OK....I see what you meant....<solved> 
2. Scroll-bars do appear sometimes...but the long-series of "a" does cause display problem every time.

Hahaha.....I tested a sentence in Thai consisting of a long string of Thai-characters(no spaces) and things worked correctly.  So I guess the long string of "a" is a non-legit case......

I have went through the demo page . And saw the smf version is 1.1.5

Just let me know, is this version is form SMF 2.0 Beta or for SMF 1.1.5

very nice mod
some questions :
1- you used this blocks on the first page as a portal but can we create some blocks on the forum ? like Tiny . for example beside the topics we have some block. the same as tiny portal
2- what about custom themes? they need to change or if we install this mode manually then all the themes will work ?!

1) -For now- It doesn't have the forum integration feature.

2) You just need to add a "Forum" button in the index.template.php and a "Make Article" button in the Display.template.php. Then it will work without any problems.
