Karl's version applies only to SMF 1.1 through 1.1.4. My mod applies both to the current release 1.1.5 and 2.0b3.1 too, and was written without benefit of reading Karl's code, not that it takes a genius to write this stuff, although it does take somebody willing to do the scut work to get the code out to the public.

This modification is intended for newbies who would rather not manually edit their code themselves. Experts are invited to mess up their own code any way they see fit!

Please note the helpful information in the readme.txt file including a link to an on-line favicon generator.

Mine doesn't work for SMF 2.x because CCTimeWiz is taking over development of my mod.
And is adding 2.x support.

There's always room for more mods. Gimme a shout if you need a hand with that! ;)

In the mean time my mod supports both active versions of SMF, 1.1.5 and 2.0b3.1. :)

OK, I installed with no problem.  I made a 16X16 image and saved it as favicon.ico (attached)

I put it in var/www/html  and got nothing... what else am I supposed to do?

Deprecated

It should be located in your web root. Please state your website URL or if you prefer to not give it out publicly just PM the site to me and I will keep it confidential. And I'll have a look. You should be able to view it by something like: http://www.mysite.com/favicon.ico

I looked at your ICO file and it seems okay to me. I would use 16x16 but 14x16 should present no problems. I'm here for you podner' :) I'll help you figger' it out if I can. :)

The site open for business, yet, but it is hosted and live.  (Just not taking registrations.)  Here's the link..

I tried to go back further with Fireftp, but when I go to var/www it won't let me transfer anything to that portion..  I put it in var/www/html  and in my main forum file just in case...

You are running a portal over SMF, and I might add, a very nice looking site!!! :)

You will have to add the favicon META tags to your portal to have it show up on the initial portal page. I'll help you here if you ask.

I note that the favicon is showing up fine when you go to your forum, reporting here with my Firefox 2.x browser. Different browsers will have different behavior.

So if you want to add the lines to your portal, just add these lines:

   <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
   <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

The first line is required and the second line is advisable, from what I've read.

Cool, will do.

Thanks for the nod about the site.  I can't take credit for it though.  I adjusted some colors to some images, but my inspiration was the ShinyBlue theme from JohnnyB.  I loved his theme, but I didn't want to stray away from the default theme, so I modified the default theme and took what I liked from his color palette.  The tabs on his are a little more shiny.  I wanted a little more distinction in the shades instead of smooth transitions in the tabs.  I tried to make it my own when I could.  I find it easier to do mods when you use the default theme.  The site this is going to replace is more my own color palette and has a nice banner area at the top which I haven't put on this one, yet.  (http://www.tk2012tournaments.com/forum/index.php)  Anyway, didn't mean to hijack your thread!

I'll do the code and see what happens!  Thanks for the help!

tk2012

DOH!!  The reason I couldn't see it was the theme I was using for Firefox3  As soon as I turned it off... THERE IT WAS!!

Don't worry about the thread hijack. I just L*O*V*E being part of the SMF community, and that's why I'm uploading my mods. If you can't find help in my thread, or if you just want to start a topic specific thread, I look over the new posts here at SMF several (dozen) times a day and whenever I see a topic that I feel I can contribute to, I offer my help in my reply. Sometimes I'm just butting in, sometimes I'm just flat out wrong, and sometimes I think I might have just the right answer.

Each of us at SMF forums has a unique experience, and mine is no less unique than anybody else's. Sometimes I just don't know WTF the topic is about, and sometimes it strikes right to my own specific knowledge.

And in fact as I get more experienced I find that I know more and more about less and less, and ultimately I expect to know everything about nothing! :D

Well I took the favicon topic on. I'm game to explore all aspects of favicons. Keep the questions coming in and I hope I'll have all the answers.  :)

I installed this mod manually and that was too easy :) You must change only one file. Thanks for this small but necessary mod Deprecated. No problem, it works great!

Pspturkey, this mod is for two types of people. (1) Novices who are not comfortable editing their own files. (2) More advanced people who like the idea of keeping their software configuration in mod packages (like myself).

I began modding my SMF by editing my local copies and then uploading them to my forum server. I kept detailed notes and as time went on my notes became more complicated... and more incomprehensible. After only a week of fairly active editing I realized that I had a mess on my hands, and that if my SMF needed reinstallation I would have to start over.

Today I have a mod package for every change I've made. If I need to start over, all I have to do is upload fresh copies of the SMF distribution files, and then just run each of my mod packages until they are all installed and the forum is back to the configuration I want.

That's why silly little modifications like this are good. It's not that most of us cannot edit our forum's source files. It's that many of us like myself find it difficult to keep track of all the big and little changes we've put into our forums. So anybody who is thinking ahead should consider doing the same as I do, keeping all the changes in mod packages where they can be handily reapplied whenever desired.

You're very welcome!

Does this Mod work for subdomains
http://boards.findtheweb.net <- my forum
http://findtheweb.net <- i want the following favicon to appear

Deprecated

Put the same favicon in both directories. It should work fine.

Daisuke_aurora

Site: Daisukesdojo.heliohost.org/

Can't get it to work. I have a portal also, and am humbly asking for help  :)

Deprecated

Put your favicon in the same directory as your SSI.php and index.php. Put another one in the root of your domain if it is different. Clear your browser cache and/or private data. Then try it.

Daisuke_aurora

Gotcha. Thanks very much, works great!

kith

Struggling to get it to work here

http://www.clanvmk.com/favicon.ico

Ico file is there, my host had one there anyway, I have also copied it to here

http://www.clanvmk.com/clanvmk/forum/favicon.ico

Which is my forum root

http://www.clanvmk.com/clanvmk/forum/index.php

The lines are definately in my ./Themes/default/index.template.php as per instructions.
Any ideas?

Probably something silly I guess?
