Problems with SimplePortal Mod ...

I know this isn't the proper place, but it seems that I don't have the permission to post to the Mods & Packages board.

I applied the SimplePortal 2.0.4 Mod to my SMF Version 1.1.5 ...

No problem until I created a block (?), which I needed to modify/delete AFTER its creation.  Received a 406 error from IE and a like error from FireFox as well.

Thinking the Mod was not compatible with v1.1.5, I uninstalled the Mod, deleted it and then attempted to apply SimplePortal 1.2 ... to no avail as I received a large red error message warning:

QuoteError in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

The test installation returned  the following in step 8:

Quote8.     Execute Modification     /usr/home/swiarda/public_html/forum/Themes/default/index.template.php     Test failed

Now what?  Am I not applying the correct version?

The only other mods I've applied are YourButton 1.1 and Hide Info Center From Guests 1.0 ... is there a conflict?

ccbtimewiz

Perhaps those mods interfere. Could you attach your index.template.php file?

Puffbuster

File is attached.

I'm concerned that while v2.0.4 appears to install just fine, I can't edit or delete an html block that I had put in.

Puffbuster

Here's a copy of the Error I get when trying to modify/delete a block that I created:

QuoteNot Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /forum/index.php could not be found on this server.
Apache/2.2.8 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8g DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_python/3.3.1 Python/2.4.2 SVN/1.4.6 PHP/4.4.8 Server at dinaraholics.utahcas.com Port 80

If I understand it correctly (which is always in doubt) it's telling me that it can't find .../forum/index.php but I've double and triple checked and I can find it just fine.

What am I doing wrong?

kat

This is a WILD stab in the dark, this...

index.php isn't read-protected, by any chance, is it?

That was just the first thing that zapped into my mind.

Silly, mebbee, but you never know...

Neh. If it was, nothing would work, would it?

ccbtimewiz

That error means your host denied the file. Contact them.

kat

Out of curiosity, ccbtw, what gave that away, for you?

Puffbuster

Two questions:

1.  Why would my host deny the index.php file?

and

2.  I followed the advice given here http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=34270.0 ... created and uploaded a .htaccess file  ... and the result is that it might have created an even bigger mess than the aforementioned 406.  How can I "back out" the .htaccess file?

kat

1) They won't be doing it deliberately.

2) Just delete the file(s).

Puffbuster

I can't see the .htaccess file either with my ftp software or with Dreamweaver.  What should I do?

ccbtimewiz

It's a hidden file-- enable "view hidden files" in your FTP settings.

Puffbuster

Sorry ... never mind ... working on it.

Puffbuster

Okay, I deleted .htaccess

Now when trying to (re-) apply the SimplePortal Mod 2.0.4 ... SMF directs me to "FTP Information Required" page and says

QuoteSome of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager.

I enter the same information that I use to upload my site to my host and press "Proceed."  All it does is blank out the password field.

Then I'm back to square 1 ... and still can't apply the mod.  What gives?

You're certain you're processing the correct password, username, and path?

You really should use the support topic for this mod.  No one has permission to create topics in the Mods and Packages board, but you do have permission to reply to existing topics there.  You should locate the topic for SimplePortal and pose your questions in that topic.
