Forum has been working great after I did the conversion from PHP a short while ago. But I'm having a problem with "some" users and there login. They have to enter the password twice or even more. I have searched the forum here but I can't find a the right fix so I'm just hoping someone might be able to help out. Thanks in advance.
Do you know where the term "Boot the computer" came from....? Just think about it for a min.

What is the error they're getting when typing their password?

Do you have anything in your Forum Error Log? What modifications do you have installed? What version of SMF are you running?

legoracer

basic error is (wrong password/incorrect password)

Nothing in the error report

Useing 1.6

Packages installed are only the updates: SMF 1.0.14 / 1.1.6 Update 1.0

Theme is Oxidize (Have tried the default theme and it still gives an incorrect password even when the password is correct).

I am having the same issue since upgrading to the latest version 1.1.6.  Error logs show password incorrect error.  Not sure what the problem is because it has happened occasionally to me and I am SURE I was typing the password correctly.

Do these errors occur if the user in question resets their password? Does this happen for new users who sign up?

I too am having the same issue. It started September 17th, just after updating to 1.1.6.

Did you try using another browser to see if the problem persists? Try clearing out all your cookie and temp files also to see if it helps.

I'm not having the problem myself and my members are not complaining yet... but the error log is full of errors like this one...

Can anyone help with this please?

We've got exactly the same problem here since updating to the latest version (1.1.6). It doesn't affect every user, but quite a lot of them.
My tests showed it's a lot more likely to happen in IE7 than in Firefox, though some users have reported problems with FF as well...
In FF, clearing the cache and authenticated sessions seems to do the trick, although some users have to do that on a daily basis.
In IE however, clearing the cache does not help at all.
Problems for IE users are:

  • the forum claiming the user's password is incorrect for a few times, then it eventually works.
  • even if they manage to log in, they get logged out at seemingly random intervals.
  • if they try to log out, an error message comes up: "Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again."
The last point can be temporarily resolved by clearing the cache. this occurs again on next login though.

Any ideas ?

Yep, that's exactly what happens here too... any developers listening to this thread??  Please help.

Axwax, have you found a solution?  This is driving me nuts!!!  Can't anyone help?

Just installed Firefox for the first time in my life!

Login problem goes away (but the header image and button layout gets screwed . . . sigh).

Problem occurs (for me) in IE7.

Is this issue resolved yet? If not, for all users having this problem, try changing the cookie name. Use repair_settings.php and you can change the cookie name there. Save the changes. Then go back and change it to the default cookie name again (click on the link below it). Clear your browser cache/cookie files and try viewing the forum again. Test another day or so and see if it will last longer this time. Remember to delete the repair_settings.php file once you are done.

Try changing your cookie settings, and then getting them to clear cache/cookies.  Then see if the issue persists.

What browsers are they occurring on, is their any common installed software that might be causing it on each users machine?

I'm sure IE can have issues with the quick login feature and the pre 'hashing' of the password.  If you use the main Login section does it occur?

I have the forum to registered users only. I am using the main login screen. I have tried the other login and it is the same problem...

This isn't happening all the time. I must log in at least 15 -50 times a day. And it would only tell me "incorrect password"2-3 times.
